3 Delta Kappa Epsilon T wo $10,000 Merit Scholarships were awarded to Sharrod Gorum '20 and Caio Driver '20 at the Mu Winter Gathering on February 1. Mr. Gorum, of New York City, received glowing remarks and an impressive recommendation from Professor Kwasi Konadu, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur endowed chair and professor of Africana Studies. Mr. Gorum, an English major and writing and rhetoric minor, is a student government senator, treasurer of The Colgate 13, and a member of the Black Student Union and University Chorus. In his application, Mr. Gorum wrote: "The merit scholarship will allow me to spend my final semester at Colgate participating in the academic life of the campus outside of my course work. Without the pressure of multiple campus jobs in addition to my schoolwork, I will be able to focus and devote my resources solely to my academic growth. My time at Colgate has helped me become the gentlemen, scholar, and jolly good fellow that I am today. All of my values are a product of the incredible men and women that make Colgate both an amazing educational institution, but more importantly, a second home." Mr. Driver, of San Francisco, an international relations major and double minor in German and philosophy, has made the Dean's List every semester at Colgate and will graduate summa cum laude. Professor Alan Swensen, department chair of German, described Mr. Driver's coursework: "For the seminar in [German] lyric poetry, Caio produced a well- written and well-argued paper investigating political ideals in the poetry of Heinrich Heine and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. I recommend him very strongly." In his application, Mr. Driver shared: "For me, a Merit Scholarship award would also add to my feeling of support from the Colgate community, where I have found great teachers, colleagues, and the best friends at heart I could ask for." Our annual scholarship awards are crucial to continuing Mu of DKE's traditions of supporting academic achievement at Colgate. If you would like to support these scholarships, please make a gift to The Mu of DKE Foundation and designate your gifts for "Scholarships."
