For the Love of
Baking:
Soon after 13-year-old Charleigh Ann
Catron of Murfreesboro launched
her macaron business, she came to
Redstone Federal Credit Union for
startup cash.
"My dad loaned me $100, and my
mom took me to Redstone during
the $400 new account promotion
to open a checking and savings
account. I used part of that money
to pay my dad back and put the rest
into the business,'' said the young
entrepreneur.
Experts say a successful entrepreneur must be motivated, creative and persuasive, and
possess vision – all traits that accurately describe the seventh-grader, who first became
interested in baking at age 10 after watching, and becoming obsessed with, the Food
Network. Once the baking bug bit, she baked at every opportunity – whenever her mom or
grandmother would open up their kitchens to her. She even hosted sleepovers that featured
"cooking challenges."
Charleigh Ann chose macarons, an intricate meringue-based confection that originated in
France, because they are challenging to make, and the challenge intrigued her. People often
confuse macarons with macaroons. Both are tasty, but macaroons are coconut-based.
