I
t's tax season, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has tips to help you choose the
right person to prepare your taxes. Choose carefully because, no matter who prepares the
return, it is ultimately the taxpayer who is responsible for the information provided.
First, check a preparer's qualifications. You can use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return
Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications at www.irs.gov. is tool helps taxpayers
find a tax return preparer with specific qualifications and is searchable.
It's also a good idea to research a preparer's history. Are there any complaints filed against
the individual? What is the business's Better Business Bureau rating? Check for disciplinary
actions and the license status for credentialed preparers.
Other important tips to consider:
• Ask about service fees. e IRS suggests avoiding a preparer that bases fees on a
percentage of the refund or who boasts bigger refunds than their competition.
• Ask to e-file your return, which is the quickest way for taxpayers to get a refund on their
federal return when choosing direct deposit.
• Is the preparer available after the April 15 filing date in the event you have questions?
• Never sign a blank return and be sure to review the return before signing it.
• Be sure to include Redstone's routing number and your
account number on the return so that your refund is correctly
deposited into your account. Find your account number and
Redstone's routing number within online banking.
