BECCA MARTIN-BROWN NWA Democrat-Gazette B ryan Hembree's Fayetteville Roots Festival has a longstanding relationship with the Oxford American magazine in Little Rock. "We like to call it a Pan-Arkansas collaboration," Hembree says, "bridging the gap between Central and Northwest Arkansas. Beyond playing some Roots Fest shows in the state capital, "over the years, we have discussed the idea of finding other projects to work on together," Hembree says. "Early in 2019, OA approached us about contributing to their new podcast, 'Points South.' It felt like a great fit for Roots and the logical next collaboration for our two organizations." The idea is coming to fruition with a series of events that also brings BlakeSt. in as a partner. Based in Bentonville, "BlakeSt. is about promoting holistic wellness and along with that comes providing interesting programming and events to members," says spokesman Juan Solano. "This partnership brings three of Arkansas' most interesting brands together to create a series of events that provides entertainment as well as the opportunity to connect with musicians and authors and to be a part of a live podcast." BlakeSt., founded in 2019, is a membership club, a 2020 version of where Sherlock Holmes' brother Mycroft could always be found in London. "From its beginnings as a humble farmhouse," its PR information reads, "BlakeSt. ushers the notion of a social club into the modern era by providing a roof over those seeking community and wellness as foundational elements towards achieving one's personal best." "While we were brainstorming for the podcast project, we also envisioned a live experience with a live audience, called Points South Live," Hembree picks up the story. "Recently, BlakeSt. House approached both Roots and OA independently about the possibility of bringing programming to BlakeSt. and to members as well as the public. We realized it was the perfect opportunity to pilot the live version of Points South. "In addition to Points South Live at BlakeSt., so far the musical artists have stayed in Northwest Arkansas for a second night and played another public, ticketed concert at the Roots HQ in Fayetteville," Hembree goes on. "For example, March 9, we will record Points South Live with Milwaukee-based folk band Dead Horses, and they will perform at the Roots HQ on Tuesday, March 10. The plans are for the authors to also speak at South on Main in Little Rock either before or after their BlakeSt. appearances. "We started to realize that this is furthering our concept of a 'Pan-Arkansas' collaboration," he concludes. "We think it has the potential to show the state that our communities can collaborate in meaningful and substantive ways." Points South Live links Bentonville, Fayetteville, Little Rock 38 WHAT'S UP!
