The Sig Scroll p. 2 F rom the moment Cliff Lyle '79 met the men of Sigma Chi as a high school senior, he was thoroughly impressed by how genuine and friendly he found everyone. As Cliff learned about the meaning behind Sigma Chi's badge and what the Fraternity was all about, he knew the Gamma Delta Chapter was the right place for him at Oklahoma State. Cliff has stayed true to The Jordan Standard since he was admitted membership to Sigma Chi and encourages undergraduate brothers to live up to it as they navigate their way through college and the real world. "If you work at the tenets contained in The Jordan Standard, you will be successful and you will be admired and respected by those around you," Cliff said. "The world is in dire need of good men. You have the right pedigree." A man of good character … Since Cliff graduated from OSU in 1979, he has looked back on many memories of living with his brothers in the Chapter house. Being surrounded by 75 to 80 men of good character molded him into a man of good character. "I learned many things about working with others and dealing with issues that served me well, both professionally and socially," Cliff said. A student of fair ability … A big part of Cliff's undergraduate experience was serving as consul for Gamma Delta his senior year. While there was a lot of responsibility placed on Cliff's shoulders, he was thankful that he could share some of it with his brothers. "One has to learn to delegate and trust those with whom you have delegated authority or duties. Being consul is not a popularity contest," Cliff said. "You are the face of the Chapter and everything that happens in or to the Chapter is under your watch. It is a great learning lab but can still keep you up at night wondering what the best course of action might be." With ambitious purposes … The leadership skills Cliff learned at Sigma Chi came in handy during his career with Xerox and The Charles Machine Works Inc. He retired from The Charles Machine Works Inc. in 2013 after spending 18 years as a regional manager in the Asia Pacific region. "I look back at that time [as a regional manager] and feel very blessed that I was able to work all around the world and that I had a wife and family who supported my need to travel." A congenial disposition … Retirement has allotted Cliff more time to hunt and fish, but most importantly, be with his family and friends. Staying connected with his Gamma Delta brothers has always been a top priority for Cliff. "Many are still in Oklahoma, but some are scattered around the country," Cliff said. "I try to attend as many Gamma Delta events as I can and remain active in the Oklahoma City area Alumni Association." Possessed of good morals … The good morals Cliff practiced at Sigma Chi have been instilled in his family. He's shared nearly 39 years of marriage with his wife, Amelia, and they have two children and two grandchildren. "Our son, Robert Lyle '10, was consul his senior year. He is now a captain in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri," Cliff said. "Our daughter, Abbey, also an OSU grad, is finishing her graduate work in biblical counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary and is married to an outstanding young man, who is also in seminary." Having a high sense of honor and a deep sense of personal responsibility … The last two principles in The Jordan Standard are ones that Cliff asks his brothers to take a few moments to reflect on. Cliff is honored to be a Sigma Chi and maintains a deep sense of personal responsibility to set up future generations of Gamma Delta members for success, and he hopes his brothers feel the same way. "The Sigma Chi scholarship fund through the OSU Foundation is a great way to get started and will begin to pay dividends immediately," Cliff said. "Gamma Delta is a special Chapter in Sigma Chi and I want to see it improve as it reaches its centennial in 2022." You can connect with Cliff at osusig@gmail.com.
