Spartans complete sweep of WV By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor With such commitment to defense, the Red Bluff Spartans softball team has been doing just fine without its star infielder. As Bryce Etzler has been sidelined as she nurses a knee injury suffered outside of team activities, Red Bluff completed a three-game sweep of the visiting West Valley Eagles (8-11-2, 1-5 Sac River League) Friday, beating the team 2-0 on the back of another strong start from Hailee Nicholls. Nicholls has been called on to do more with Etzler out the last three games. And with the way it's gone, she's showing she can handle the extra responsibilities. The right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings, gave up just two hits and batted in a run on the warm and clear day. She remained ever modest. "If it wasn't for my defense we wouldn't have won the game," Nicholls said, adding, "We've been together for a year, so that helps it a lot." The 8th-grade squad finished in third, the 6thgrade team earned consolation honors and the 5th and 10-11th grade teams finished sixth.
