3 DELTA TAU DELTA W hen Jeff Starnes '91 and his Delt brothers joined the women of Alpha Omega Pi for a Halloween pumpkin decorating event in the fall of 1988, everyone was excited to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Muncie. What Jeff didn't realize that night, though, was that it would shape the rest of his life. During the event, Jeff met his wife, Mary. They have relived many of their Ball State memories through their sons, Sam Starnes '20 and Jackson Starnes '22, who have both had a profound impact on Epsilon Mu. "If it hadn't been for the fraternity, it's a whole different path for me. Having both my boys go through it, enjoy it, and make great friends that they're going to have for a lifetime has been fun to watch," Jeff said. "They've taken leadership roles and it's going to help them for when they get out into the workforce. They're already going to have experience with being leaders and push themselves to do more. I owe a lot to my experience at Ball State with Delta Tau Delta." Delt's pillars of truth, courage, faith, and power have guided Jeff to a successful 20-plus- year career in medical sales, the last 11 as a dermatology sales professional and field sales trainer for Galderma. As Sam wraps up his senior year, he's excited to start his career in the property management field. Sam has been interviewing with various organizations and hopes to work in the apartment industry. He believes the lessons learned from serving as the academic chairman and on Epsilon Mu's honor board will pay dividends in the real world. "Being in both those positions taught me how to work in different environments. I learned how to help people and that everyone has their own different strengths," Sam said. "Some people are better at studying at the library or some people struggle in different classes. I have to find a way to help people succeed in different ways." Sam knows Epsilon Mu will be in good hands after he graduates with Jackson serving as the chapter president. Jackson also was the recruitment chairman as a freshman. "Jackson is pretty outgoing, but he's also quiet," Sam said. "Now that he's taken over as president, I've seen him come out of his shell and become more of a leader and more social, so that's kind of cool to see him grow like that." The Starneses were in agreement that they joined Epsilon Mu because they felt most welcome there. Sam and Jackson aren't the only undergraduate members to follow in their father's footsteps to Delta Tau Delta. "Andy Yakubik '90 was there when I was there, and his son, Alec Yakubik '22, is the vice president. It's kind of funny that we both have kids there in leadership positions," Jeff said. "His older son, Andy Yakubik II, Purdue University '20, is a Delt, too. Scott Rhoad '92 also has a son at BSU (Jacob Rhoad '20). It's surreal to go there and see your kids at the same place that you were." You can connect with the Starneses at the following email addresses.
