Thursday June 17, 2010 Wilcox ladies buzz fairways Cubs beat Athletics Alfonso Soriano and Star- lin Castro had two RBIs each for the Cubs, who won for just the seventh time in their last 19 games. Dempster (5-5) gave up eight hits and two runs, striking out seven in 6 2-3 innings. A’s starter Gio Gonzalez (6-5) surrendered eight hits and a season-high six runs in five innings. Lee, in a 1-for-13 slump, led off the bottom of the second by lining his eighth homer of the season into the left-field bleachers, tying it at 1. Soriano walked one out later and moved to third on Geovany Soto’s liner to center that was scored a double when Ryan Sweeney fell down fielding it. Castro followed with an RBI single to left and Soto was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a strong throw from Conor Jackson. Castro hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 in the fourth. It followed singles by Lee and Xavier Nady, a sacri- fice bunt by Soriano — his first ever for the Cubs — and an intentional walk to Soto. Nady had a two-out RBI single, a hard smash that went past third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and made it 4-1 in the fifth, and Soriano followed with a two-run double down the right-field line. Swiss upset Spain Switzerland 1, Spain 0 DURBAN, South Africa (AP) — Switzerland pulled off a shocking upset at the World Cup on Wednesday, beating European champion Spain 1-0 on Gelson Fernandes’ sec- ond-half goal. Fernandes clipped the ball into the net in the 52nd minute, ending Spain’s run of 12 straight wins and handing the Span- ish team its second loss in 50 games. Spain’s only other loss during the stretch was to the United States, at the Confeder- ations Cup in South Africa last year. Spain outshot the Swiss 24-8 and held the ball 63 percent of the time, but could find no way through Switzerland’s determined defense. It was Switzerland’s first win over Spain. Eren Derdiyok created Switzerland’s goal by surging through the center of Spain’s defense and rounding Iker Casillas on one of Switzerland’s rare attacks. Gerard Pique’s desperate tackle stopped Derdiyok, but Fernandes was on hand to pounce on the loose ball and score. At the final whistle, Fernandes fell to his knees and raised both arms to the sky. The entire team then went to the small section of Swiss fans in the Moses Mabhida Stadium and saluted them as they cheered and rang alpine cow bells. Lincecum hit by liner in Giants’ win SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tim Lince- cum was coming out of the game anyway. He just made a dramatic exit after getting hit by a line drive. Lincecum struck out 10 before get- ting nailed in the back of the right shoulder and leaving after six innings Wednesday as the San Francisco Giants beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3. ‘‘Timmy is fine,’’ Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ‘‘There were no problems there. He worked hard and those guys made him work. It was a gutty effort. He has that ability to turn it up a notch when its needed. He had some big strikeouts.’’ The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was struck by Miguel Tejada’s shot, which turned into a groundout that ended the sixth. Lincecum crouched close to the ground for a moment, but walked off the field under his own power. ‘‘It just skimmed my shoulder,’’ Lincecum said. ‘‘I didn’t see the ball coming back at me. It was hit pretty well and it just kind of ricocheted off me. I was more shocked than anything. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah is poised to become the 12th member of the Pac-10 as the conference quickly pivoted Wednesday to invite the Utes after being turned down by Texas and four other members of the Big 12 two days ago. I really didn’t know what to do so I kind of just sat there, then thought, ’OK, I’m fine, I can get up now.’’’ Lincecum (7-2) allowed two runs and eight hits, with four walks. His three wild pitches were the most by a Giant in six years. ‘‘A few balls got away from me,’’ Lincecum said. ‘‘I had to battle out there, throw a lot of pitches. I’m not going to let it get me down.’’ Jeremy Affeldt relieved for the Giants to begin the seventh. Brian Wil- son recorded the final five outs for his 18th save in 20 chances. Aubrey Huff and Juan Uribe hit back-to-back home runs leading off the sixth, putting the Giants ahead 4-2. Huff, who had three hits, also dou- bled home a run. Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa and Nate Schierholtz also drove in runs as the Giants won their 10th of 12 home series. ‘‘Huff and Uribe like to hit in those situations with runners on base and a chance to drive in runs,’’ Bochy said. ‘‘They’ve both done a good job in that 3-4 hole.’’ Utah officials did not immediately say whether the invitation would be accepted, but it would be shocking if the Utes didn’t leave the Mountain West Conference for the Pac-10. Spokeswoman Liz Abel said the athletics department Julio Lugo had three hits and drove in two runs for the Orioles, who have lost 10 of their last 11 road games and have been outscored 60-26 over that span. Cesar Izturis also drove in a run. Jeremy Guthrie (3-8) gave up four runs on eight hits and matched his career-worst four-game losing streak. Guthrie has allowed 11 of his 42 runs in the first inning, including two to the Giants. The Giants could’ve gotten more, except for a baserunning blun- der. Andres Torres drew a leadoff walk and Huff hit an RBI double. Sandoval singled home another run, but was called out for passing Juan Uribe, who had come back to tag from first. ‘‘Pablo said he’d never been in that situation before,’’ Bochy said. ‘‘We might still be hitting in the first if a cou- ple of innings don’t happen. Juan was trying to make a heads-up play and move into scoring position and Pablo was watching the ball.’’ The Orioles tied the game with sin- gle runs in the fourth and fifth. Lugo, Craig Tatum and Izturis each singled to open the fourth before Lincecum came back to strike out Guthrie, Corey Pat- terson and Tejada. Utah receives invite to join the Pac-10 would not comment until Thursday, after the school’s board of trustees meets to discuss the school’s confer- ence affiliation. A news conference was scheduled at the football stadium fol- lowing the meeting. Pac-10 officials are expected to attend Thurs- day’s news conference in Utah. Utah has been a member of the MWC since the league began in 1999 — and one of its most success- ful in football and basket- ball. two goals, helping Uruguay to a 3-0 victory that pushed South Africa closer to being the first host nation to go out in the opening round of a World Cup. Forlan scored on a deflected 25-yard shot in the 24th minute and converted a penalty kick in the 80th to give Uruguay its first World Cup victory since a group game at the 1990 competition. Alvaro Pereira added the third score in injury time. Uruguay has four points from two games in Group A, while South Africa has one and needs to beat France on Tuesday to have any chance to stay in the competition. South Africa goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was sent off for giving away the penalty. Chile 1, Honduras 0 NELSPRUIT, South Africa (AP) — Jean Beausejour scored the only goal and Chile beat Honduras 1-0 for its first World Cup victory in exactly 48 years. In a free-flowing match, Chile won the opening game of Group H after Beausejour tapped in a cross from Mauricio Isla in the 34th minute. Chile came close to doubling its lead on several occa- sions. In the 62nd minute, Alexis Sanchez sent a clear-cut chance wide after he was put in free by ever-dangerous play- maker Jorge Valdivia. In the 64th minute, defender Waldo Ponce saw his close-range header saved brilliantly by goal- keeper Noel Valladares. Chile’s last victory during the finals was on June 16, 1962, when it came in third as host of the World Cup by beating Yugoslavia. This is Chile’s first World Cup since 1998, when three draws sent it into the second round.
