KAPPA DELTA | UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI PAGE 2 FROM COLUMBIA TO HOLLYWOOD Kathy Waters '77 Makes Her Mark Behind the Big Screen K athy Waters '77 joined Epsilon Iota's second ever member class as a junior. The newness of the chapter allowed for following traditions while also creating new traditions, much like Kathy did as a member of Epsilon Iota and a busy theatre major at Mizzou. Kappa Delta broadened Kathy's social circle and gave her a sense of belonging in an environment away from her parents, which she appreciated as a townie. She was permitted to miss many chapter meetings due to the demands of her theatre obligations yet stayed involved in Kappa Delta. "I participated when I could and I hope I made up for the quantity of time with quality of participation," she recalled. "That leniency helped me to achieve my goals." While an actor in the Mizzou theatre department, Kathy knew that financial security in the entertainment business would come easiest in roles behind the camera. A family friend and executive at Columbia Pictures helped her land a role as a production assistant on the film The Competition. After that she worked at Columbia on Annie, before transitioning to sitcoms at NBC. It was in 1987 Kathy found her calling as a script supervisor. While being a freelance script supervisor gives her the luxury of selecting her own projects, she must endure some long breaks with no work (or pay). "When I work, it's all-consuming; 60-70 hours on the clock in a five-day work week." Her work on the 2018 lyrical drama executively produced by Oprah, David Makes Man, contributed to its recent nomination as Best Dramatic Series at the Critics Choice Awards. Recent projects have brought Kathy down South. She spent five weeks in Savannah for a Hallmark movie and traveled up the coast to supervise a new Netflix series in Charleston from April to September. With the industry burnout rate high, Kathy is proud to have sustained a career for all these years. She served three terms as president of the Florida Chapter of Women in Film and was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to serve two, four-year terms on the Florida Film and Entertainment Advisory Council, of which she was chairman for two years. Throughout a successful and intense career, Kathy still appreciates her time at Epsilon Iota. "I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to be a KD at Mizzou," she said. Kathy makes her home in Winter Park, Florida, and can be reached at katieh2o@mac.com. Teresa Houchin '76 ran for assessor of Scott County, Mo., in 1992, winning the election.
