Texas Alpha Sets a Precedent (Continued from page 3) CONNECT ONLINE Website www.texassigep.org Linkedin Sigma Phi Epsilon – Texas Alpha I W e had our year planning meeting in January at the UT Club to outline the officers' goals for 2020. We use those goals throughout the year to measure the EC's performance. e EC and several young- er active members will go to the SigEp Carlson Leadership Academy in Irving, Texas, for addi- tional training in their respective positions. While our undergraduates are exceptional, there is still controversy clouding fraternities across the U.S., and Texas Alpha is not im- mune. In December, one of the news stations posted a headline that stated that there was a sexual assault at 2 a.m. at 2500 Pearl Street. Aer being notified of this story, several of the alumni got in contact with the chapter officers. e chapter officers confirmed that no police were at the house that night. e next day, we met with UTPD and Austin PD and found that the report was in error. I have also reached out to the news station that publicized the initial article and asked that they correct their story. is incident, while unfortunately made public without confirmation, is now closed. I want to reassure the alumni and parents that we, as a local alumni board, are repeatedly talking with the young men about their behav- ior, especially toward women, and the impact of that behavior on their lives. During the fall semester, we have had speakers from the univer- sity talking specifically about sexual assault and drug and alcohol abuse. ese are topics that stay at the forefront of our conversations, not because of any behavior endemic in our chapter, but because of the national news involving fra- ternities. We try our best to guide and advise the men to act in ways that will allow them to look back on their time with Texas Alpha with pride. What makes these efforts so worth doing is that this chapter is full of fine, upstanding young men. ey are a meritorious example of what we want Texas Alpha to demonstrate. ey have earned our trust and deserve our support. With all of the fun, growth, and brotherhood that Tex- as Alpha offers its young men, the ability of the chapter to meet real-life issues head-on based on a belief that their behavior meets and exceeds the standards set by society makes me especially proud of these men. Come to the house on April 17-18 and let me show you what I mean. HFF, Lynn Butler '88 President, Alumni/Volunteer Committee lynn.butler@huschblackwell.com Our Admirable Texas Alpha Undergraduates
