Friday, April 12, 2013 – Daily News 7A Businesses go all out for decoration contest By KATE GLEIM Special to the DN Well over a decade ago Bill Kemp, a respected and loved businessman in town, asked me if I would be willing to put a team together to judge the Downtown Round Up Decorating Contest which he was in charge of. As hard as Bill worked to promote and support our community I could hardly say no. Now every year at this time, a group from our store gets the fun of visiting the businesses who participate in helping give Red Bluff its historical, western ambiance for the 11 Days of Rodeo. As a retail business owner I can attest to how much time and energy goes along with the fun of creating displays. I think it is outstanding that our community has so many businesses willing to help decorate our town every year, and this year is not different. The theme for 2013 is Women of the West and the decorations are better than ever. We hope you will stop by the participating businesses to join in the fun and take a trip down memory lane. When it comes to western lore, history and life, Red Bluff is rich beyond the imagination, and aren't we blessed to be a part of this community where home town America still endures. This year we started our adventure at Liberty Law, APC where Sue Silvera shared some local and family history and memorabilia about her authentic displays. Stopping next at Tobin and Associates CPA we enjoyed snacks and Courtesy photo Grand prize winners from Book Barn on Oak Street. shared some wonderful family stories with all the ladies. Having gathered family heirlooms together, their display showcased this year's theme, "Women of the West," including a beautiful red morning dress which belonged to Lori's grandmother, who once served lunch to Geronimo. A stop by PremierWest Bank for a bit of country fun and then on to Crossroads Feed and Ranch where women of the west can always find fabulous rodeo wear. At Emeritus at Lassen House we thought we might have made a wrong turn and arrived in the Wild West, as we were greeted with straw, barns, horses and all manner of western equipment. We were almost thrown in jail as we entered the building, but the cowgirls there helped us escape. At Express Employment Professionals it was noted that Lisa Hansen, our chamber president, has managed to land herself on a wanted poster. And if you haven't been by there to see "Express's Red Rock," he is back again this year. When it comes to bling, don't miss the cowgirls serving at the Cozy Diner and their fun Round Up decorations. As always, Sally Ainsworth and her talented staff created an amazing and educational display at the Tehama County Library. Upon entering we were serenaded, treated to Cowboy Cornbread and heard several great stories about women of the west. Be sure to stop by for a bit of history and fun and don't miss the Cowboy Poetry Reading on April 17. This year Wells Fargo is giving away a "legendary pony named Mack" when you open a checking account, and with their annual generosity, 'bribed' the judges with ponies for a few well behaved children in the S.E.R.R.F. after school program. Wink Fashion and Salon is the place for great ser- vice and a lot of cowgirl bling. The Gold Exchange created a fun display of the old west in their windows for passersby and there is a rumor that the Red Rock Raiders are going to hit the Gold Exchange again this year, which means loot for a lot of lucky winners at the Chili Cook-off. Adding to the decorating story about western women, Shear-n-Dipity entered the competition this year with a fun entry and Wink Fashion and Salon is the place for great service and a lot of cowgirl bling – and don't miss seeing the fashions they provided for the Bikini Barrel Racers! New to Main Street, Vitality Healing Arts created a fantastic window display which includes a living garden and awesome trees made out of craft paper. Under the direction of Linda McCay, the Shasta College Humanities class, in conjunction with the Tehama County Museum has created fabulous, informative displays filled with memorabilia, antiques, and important documents that illustrate the history underlying the movies they are playing on Friday, April 12 – Gone with the Wind and 8 Seconds which honors the 25th anniversary of Lane Frost's famous ride on Red Rock. The Grand Prize winner of four rodeo tickets was awarded to the Book Barn where Linda and Jack Gaines, along with Nolan Golsh and Phillip Moller, who are part of their team, created an outrageous display both inside and out and were dressed in full costume. A covered wagon was pulled up to the curb, and the 'owners' had set up camp, including laundry hung out to dry – check out the pantaloons. Their mercantile had a seamstress, homemade preserves, quilts and of course there were books galore about the west and the strong, independent women who helped carve out a life when only the tough kept going. Social Security: Identity theft — It's no joke By Jennifer Cooper Social Security Manager in Redding When the first of April came, you may have been on guard to protect yourself from an April Fool's Day prank. But every day of the year, you should be wary of identity thieves. Identity theft is no joking matter. Identity thieves victimize millions of people each year. Identity thieves have some sly tricks to obtain your personal information. They do it by: • Stealing wallets, purses, and your mail; • Posing by phone or email as someone who legitimately needs information about you, such as employers or landlords; • Stealing personal information you provide to an unsecured site on the Internet, from business or personnel records at work, and personal information in your home; or • Rummaging through your trash, the trash of businesses, and public trash dumps for personal data. Don't be fooled by identity thieves; take the proper precautions. Be sure to safeguard your personal information, such as your Social Security number and mother's maiden name. If an identity thief scores this information, it could result in more than monetary loss for you as a victim—it also can hurt your credit score and record. You can help protect yourself by not carrying your Social Security card with you and not providing your personal information to unknown sources over the Internet or by phone. Be sure to shred any documents, bills, or paperwork before you throw them away. Most important, never reply to an email claiming to be from Social Security that asks you for your Social Security number or other personal information. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from Social Security and you have doubts about the validity of the caller, you can call us at 1-800-772- RANDAL S.
