2B Daily News – Friday, April 12, 2013 SHARKS 3, RED WINGS 2 SO Marleau leads in shootout win DETROIT (AP) — Patrick Marleau scored the winner in the shootout and had a short-handed goal early in the game, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Antti Niemi made 27 saves through overtime, while Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots for Detroit. Niemi got his glove on Niklas Kronwall's slap shot with 44 seconds left in the extra period, giving the Sharks a chance in the shootout. San Jose, trying to earn home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs, is in fourth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of St. Louis and Los Angeles. The Red Wings, clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, are hoping to extend the franchise's streak of consecutive postseason appearances to 22 but have lost five of their last seven games. The Sharks and Red Wings are the only teams who have been in the playoffs every season since the 2004-05 lockout. San Jose had lost two straight, GIANTS (Continued from page 1B) charge the ball and overcook that whole play.'' Added Castro: ''It's really frustrating. I feel bad myself because that's a routine play and that's not supposed to happen. I tried to be too fast but I can learn; that play can't happen again.'' Feldman allowed a single to Brandon Belt and walked Gregor Blanco after getting one out in the fifth. Hisanori Takahashi relieved and Nick Noonan singled to load the bases. Vogelsong then walked to force in a run and Pagan put the Giants ahead with a flyball to left field. Brandon Crawford then singled in a run to make it 7-5. CARDS (Continued from page 1B) 4:59.65. It was good enough to best Anderson's time of 5:17.88. In the 4kg-shotput event, Corning's Morgan Parker notched a 36 foot, 4 inch throw to top Central Valley's Yessica Lopez (29 feet, 1.5 inches). In the discus event, the Cards' Morgan Parker including a 4-0 setback at Columbus, after a seven-game winning streak. Pavel Datsyuk scored for Detroit on a backhander to start the shootout before Logan Couture slipped a shot between Niemi's pads. Damien Brunner then was stopped by Niemi and Joe Pavelski got a shot past Howard, but hit the post. Detroit's Gustav Nyquist made a nifty spin move but was stopped, and Marleau followed with the winner on a quick wrist shot. Marleau had a short-handed goal to put San Jose ahead 2:35 into the game. Detroit's Justin Abdelkader tied it midway through the second period. The Red Wings took their first lead early in the third on Jakub Kindl's first power-play goal and quickly lost it. Couture scored 1:31 later on a power play to make it 2-all. The Red Wings start a four-game road trip Friday night at Chicago and return home to play three of their last four games of the regular season. San Jose's road trip continues Saturday at Dallas and Phoenix before finishing the regular season with four of six games at home. Detroit had a shot to get off to a good start when San Jose's Tommy Wingels was called for boarding less than a minute into the game, but the Sharks took advantage of a giveaway. Henrik Zetterberg passed instead of shooting into a partially open net, Pavelski got in front of it, carried the puck deep into the Detroit on a 2-on-1 rush and perfectly set up Marleau for his team-high 17th goal. San Jose outshot the Red Wings 11-5 in the first period in which they were held without a shot for nearly the first 8 minutes of the game. Niemi made a key save from his left hip in the second period, getting enough of his glove on Cory Emmerton's shot — just outside of the goal line — to let San Jose keep its lead. The Red Wings kept the pressure on San Jose and it paid off. Johan Franzen had the puck behind the net and passed to Abdelkader, who scored on a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle to match his career high with an eighth goal and suddenly Detroit was outshooting the Sharks 16-14. Feldman lasted just 4 1-3 innings and gave up six runs — two earned — on seven hits. He walked three and struck out three. ''We came back yesterday against the Rockies,'' Crawford said. ''We have a lot of good guys in our lineup, so we've battled back before. We did it last year in the playoffs and we have a lot of similar players back this year, so we know how to battle back, for sure.'' Jeremy Affeldt relieved Vogelsong after the sixth but he faltered in the eighth and was lifted after Alfonso Soriano doubled and Nate Schierholtz reached on a broken bat infield single. Santiago Casilla came on and got Welington Castillo to hit into a double play that scored Soriano to make it 7-6. Luis Valbuena followed with a double to deep center, but pinch-hitter Steve Clevenger ended the inning looking at a third strike. Giants closer Sergio Romo allowed a one-out double to David DeJesus in the ninth but finished for his sixth save. ''I feel pretty good right now,'' Romo said. ''It's a long season and I still have a lot of work to do. I'm real happy with the way I've started, but I just try to do the best I can for my teammates.'' Anthony Rizzo hit a tworun homer in the third inning to give Chicago a 5-0 lead. Brent Lillibridge broke an 0for-17 start to the season with a two-run single in the second for the Cubs NOTES: San Francisco is in the midst of playing five consecutive day games (including four scheduled at Wrigley Field) for the first time since April 17-21, 1996. . The Giants have now won eight of their last nine games vs. the Cubs. ... Friday's probable pitchers: Giants RHP Matt Cain (0-1) vs. Cubs RHP Carlos Villanueva (0-0). ... Former Blackhawks great and NHL Hall of Famer Tony Esposito was guest conductor during the seventh inning stretch's ''Take Me Out to the Ball Game.'' ... Thursday marked the earliest date for the Giants to play at Wrigley Field in the team's 131-year history. The previous earliest visit to Wrigley was April 13, 1963.. cruised to a win with a 110-foot, 4-inch throw. McCoy capped the day with another win in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 5 inches, which was good enough to narrowly edge Anderson's Kilee Hannan's posted jump of 14 feet. .75 inches. On the boys side, the Cardinals' Jesus Diera picked up a couple of wins in the 800- and 1600- meter races, posting times of 2:08.75 and 4:41.78, respectively. In the 100-meter event, Corning's Ivan Alvarado (11.12) beat out Anderson's Jeremiah Emershy (11.19). And in the 400meter finals, Jeremy DuBois (53.21) edged Anderson's Connor McCone (53.93). DuBois teamed up with Chayce Maday, Alan Rodriguez and Diera to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:50.97, which beat out Anderson's time of 3:52.58. Corning's Kolton Cutler vaulted his way to a win in the pole vault event, clearing the 10-foot mark. Alvarado notched a couple more wins on the day in the long jump and triple jump with leaps of 18 feet, 11.75 inches and 36 feet, 1 inch, respectively. NHL, union join to fight homophobia TORONTO (AP) — The NHL and its players' union are partnering with an advocacy organization fighting homophobia in sports. The You Can Play Project will conduct seminars at the NHL's rookie symposium and make its resources and personnel available to teams. Players will be able to seek counseling or ask questions regarding sexual orientation. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the venture underlines that ''the official policy of the NHL is one of inclusion on the ice, in our locker rooms and in the stands.'' Rutgers moves to address Rice coaching scandal NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University took steps Thursday to publicly address the fallout from the scandal over its men's basketball coach, announcing an expected independent review and hiring a respected former state attorney general as the new top lawyer for the school. The measures, announced at the first board of governors meeting since coach Mike Rice was fired last week, were intended to get the university back on track during a time of transformation. Rutgers is absorbing most parts of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, including two medical schools, and is working on a strategic plan for how to catapult the school to be NBA WESTERN CONFERENCE MASTERS (Continued from page 1B) self out of the tournament. ''It's a good start,'' he said. ''Some years, some guys shot 65 starting out here. But right now, I'm only four back and I'm right there.'' Garcia and Leishman had a one-shot lead over Dustin Johnson, who has a game that fits perfectly for Augusta and he finally brought it. Johnson hit a 9-iron for his second shot on the par-5 13th and made a 15-foot eagle putt, and he smashed his drive on the par-5 15th and hit pitching wedge just through the green for an easy birdie. Fred Couples, the 53year-old wonder at his favorite major, made bogey on the 18th and still was in the large group at 68. There were a dozen rounds in the 60s, and nearly half the field shot par or better. Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson recovered from a rough start by running off four birdies in a fivehole stretch on the back nine to salvage a 71, while Rory McIlroy had a 72. Woods said he struggled with the slower pace of the greens, and so did defending champion Bubba Watson, who opened with a 75. ''They're soft and they are slow, and consequently we have 45 people at par or better,'' Mickelson said. ''But that means I've got to change my whole mindset and just get after ''The last eight holes mean a lot that I kept my composure, even though I didn't hit it as well as I did the first 10 holes,'' he said. Composure is everything to Garcia, a 32year-old who still acts like a kid. Only three weeks ago, he hit a tee shot at Bay Hill that settled on a large branch in a tree. Garcia climbed the tree, played a remarkable backhanded shot to the fairway and then jumped some 10 feet to the ground. He withdrew a few holes later when the rain arrived. He smiles. He sulks. And he always says what he's thinking, which sometimes get him trouble. Garcia doesn't regret his comments at Augusta last year, only that he didn't choose his words carefully. He chalked it up to frustration, but says he is trying just as hard as he did when he was 19 and challenged Woods at Medinah in the 1999 PGA. ''Every time I tee it off, I try to play as well as I can, hope that my best that week is really, really good,'' Garcia said. ''And if I manage to do that, I will have a chance at winning. If my best is not that good, then, I'll struggle a little bit. Today, my best was pretty good. And I'm looking forward to doing the same thing the next three days.'' Guan only wants to enjoy himself, and as he sat in Butler Cabin for an interview, the Chinese teen looked composed. Guan said his goal for the week was to enjoy himself, and even a score two shots better than the defending champion didn't change that. ''I think I'm pretty focused on golf,'' Guan said. ''It's made me do pretty good so far.'' Pct GB y-L.A. Clippers 52 26 .667 — x-Golden State 45 33 .577 7 L.A. Pacific W L these pins, because the ball's not running like it used to and I'm giving this course way too much respect because of my past knowledge.'' It's not about respect for Garcia. Augusta National is the ultimate love-hate relationship, and Thursday was a rarity. He loved it. Garcia began his round with an approach that danced by the hole and left him a tap-in birdie. He rolled in a 20-foot birdie on the par-3 sixth, and then shot up the leaderboard with a pair of tough, downhill putts from 8 feet on the ninth and 15 feet on the 10th. ''It's obviously not my most favorite place,'' he said. ''But you know, we try to enjoy it as much as we can each time we come here. Sometimes it comes out better than others, but today it was one of those good days. Let's enjoy it while it lasts.'' That was a far different attitude than last year on the weekend, when he went from one shot out of the lead going into the third round to back in the pack with a 75. He told Spanish reporters that day he had been trying his entire career to win a major and ''I don't feel capable of winning. ... After 13 years, my chances are over. I'm not good enough for the majors. That's it.'' Not so fast. Garcia struggled off the tee on the back nine, and he three-putted for par at the 13th. He also made tough par saves on the 11th and 17th for his first bogey-free round at the Masters since 2002. Union head Donald Fehr says the project ''will foster an inclusive hockey environment from the grassroots level to the professional ranks.''
