FEBRUARY 23-29, 2020 Thanks To Mark Smith, Arts Ships Have Risen LARA JO HIGHTOWER NWA Democrat-Gazette T he Arkansas Arts Council earlier this month announced its 2020 Governor's Arts Awards, revealing that Northwest Arkansas' own Mark Landon Smith was the recipient of the prestigious Individual Artist Award. "It's very affirming," says Smith about the award. "I'm lucky that I have a very affirming community around me, with family and friends, but it's always an honor when someone from the outside says 'Look at what your passion is doing!' It's all about cross- community support. It's that old thing where all boats rise when the tides come in, and I'm grateful to have a bunch of boats and a bunch of tides." Smith's contributions to the arts world in Northwest Arkansas are plentiful, says Jules Taylor, longtime friend and Arts Live education director. Taylor nominated Smith for the honor based on his role as executive director at the youth focused Arts Live Theatre, his work founding and managing Actor's Casting Agency, his accomplishments as a published playwright and his many roles on stage, screen and television. "I knew Mark deserved that so much," says Taylor of the award. "I've never seen anyone work as hard or as thoughtfully as Mark does, and I'm someone who has worked with him at Arts Live for 15 years. He is the most thoughtful person — he is so aware of making every single student feel completely unique and special. He puts a lot of effort into that, and it's so touching to see. He just goes and goes — he'll be working on four different projects at the same time. He's gotten 17 scripts published! He's a big deal in the publishing world. When you search him on the Internet as a playwright, you see that his stuff is getting produced all over the place." Smith also is a co-founder of the fringe theater company Ceramic Cow Productions and the improv group Phunbags, and he is a co-facilitator of the Arkansas Playwrights Workshop. Taylor says that a lot of what makes Smith's contributions to the arts community so special is that he focuses so much on promoting others' talents instead of solely focusing on his own. "That's part of what I see so much of — the selflessness and how hard he works to get things for other people," she says. "I realized I can use my knowledge and my connections and my experience to help others in their artistic journey," says Smith. "I think that everything I've done up to this point has led me to be in a position to really help others. When I was going to school, I learned how to do a lot of different things and how to do them well." With the increase of television and films shooting in Northwest Arkansas, Smith has been able to connect many actors to jobs in that industry. "Because of my work as a casting director, a lot of the kids at Arts Live are in films now. How often do you get that opportunity, to glide back and forth between the two mediums? And that's because of people like Rockhill Studio's Kerri Elder and filmmakers like Ryan and Jennica Schwartzman." Smith and the other recipients of the Governor's Awards will be feted at a luncheon at the Governor's Mansion in March. Mark Landon Smith was at the Arts Live Theatre office with co-worker and friend Jules Taylor when he opened a letter from the Arkansas Arts Council notifying him he was receiving a 2020 Governor's Arts Award.
