By Jackie Deal Are you tired of having the fi lings in your dentures popped out by loud, raspy music? Staying home because the music is too-oo loud? You might want to try "acoustic" music. That's instrumental music NOT plugged into electricity. Yes, microphones are used (you do want to hear some- thing, don't you?) Gold Star RV Park has two acous- tic jams. Wednesday evenings is Country/Western and Sunday night is Gospel. Both begin at 6:15 p.m.-- yes, that's right. There are so many musicians that they're now start- ing both jams at 6:15 p.m. Twenty to thirty musicians draw numbered poker chips to determine the order of play. And the large audience set- tles back to enjoy some of the sweet- est music in town. (Okay, once in a while some of it's a bit "sour", but then we don't expect perfection all the time, do we?) Scott Bush is the jam master for Wed. evening and Lee Black con- ducts the Sunday jam. Are they related? Lee solemnly says, "Scott is the youngest son of my oldest sis- ter's second husband's third daugh- ter's fi rst nephew's sister's..…" Scott slyly whispers, "He's my Uncle." They lived about fi fteen miles apart in Utah and moved here in 2005 Two Acoustic Jams Lee started playing a four string guitar and fi nally borrowed a six string which he plays. (He's now "progressed" to a mandolin??) He claims to have only sung for funer- als before he came to Quartzsite. He was asked to lead a Gospel jam here and determined that every evening but Sunday was taken. Lee admits that he went through a "phase" where he sang only gospel but he decided "The Lord must get awfully tired of hearing nothing but Gospel." Now he sings a wide range of music plus his most popular hi- larious comic songs; sung in a voice that must be the envy of every sing- er around. Scott is shy quiet man with a twin- kle in his eyes and a warm smile. He says he started singing here in Quartzsite to karaoke. You can feel the genuine welcome he extends to everyone-musicians and audienc- es. He manages to lead without in- terfering with the fl ow of the music and yet keeps everything moving. He is pleased with the new sound system that he says makes "Gold Star one of the best music venues in town". He laughs as they agree it's hard to have a sound system that pleases both the hard-of-hearing and those with sensitive hearing. Gold Star has probably the larg- est room and defi nitely the largest parking area and now says Scott "the best sound system." Now let's debunk some myths and rumors: Gold Star is not a "Mormon only park". It WAS originally started by three LDS men but now is about "50-50" Mormon and non-Mormon. Lee assures "if you come for the music, we aren't going to try to convert you. Wednesday and Sunday 6:15 at Gold Star on Riggles Ave. just south of Exit 19.
