14 | Januar y 2020 F E A T U R E M A K I NG RO OM Growing residency program to get its own dedicated space on campus I n the 63 years since a modest Cape Fear Valley Hospital opened its doors, the surrounding campus has continually grown to meet the needs of area patients and families. Soon, the golden shovels will be dusted off for another groundbreaking. In a spot adjacent to Cape Fear Valley Cancer Treatment and CyberKnife Center, a five-story building will be constructed to house Cape Fear Valley's growing residency program. Together with Campbell University's Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine, the residency program began in 2017 to help address an increasing shortage of primary care and specialty physicians in nearby rural areas. In two years, the program has already more than tripled in size, going from 32 residents to 102. Within the next decade, it is expected to include 300 residents. Clearly, it's time to make more room. What Will the Building Hold? e Center for Graduate Medical Education and Research will span five floors. e first floor will be anchored by a 500-seat auditorium, the only area on campus large enough to hold all 300 residents and the faculty and staff guiding them through the program. e space will be modifiable to expand for large gatherings or break down into smaller instructional arrangements.
