6A Daily News – Thursday, April 4, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Quilt challenge winners To help kick off the Sun Country Quilters Guild 2013 Quilt Show to be held on Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, a Quilt Show Challenge was started. Butterfly fabric designed by Laurel Burch was distributed to any guild member who wanted to participate. Those who chose to enter into the challenge were to make a quilt depicting their interpretation from one of three categories: (1) Most creative use of the challenge fabric (2) Best depiction of the Quilt Show theme "A Garden of Quilts" or (3) Viewers Choice. There were 17 unique and original quilts entered into the challenge. At the monthly meeting held on March 25, the members voted for their choice in the three categories. However, the winners were not revealed at the meeting. Instead, to see who the winners of the Quilt Show Challenge are, everyone is invited to go to California Kitchen & Company at 645 Main St. in downtown Red Bluff. Karyn Harvey, owner of California Kitchen & Company, has graciously agreed to display all the beautiful quilts in her store starting on Friday, April 5. Simpson presents Brahms REDDING —The Simpson University Music Department will present its Spring 2013 Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the Heritage Life Center. The free concert, which includes vocal and instrumental pieces, also features a performance of Johannes Brahms' "A German Requiem" (Ein deutches Requiem) by the Simpson University Chorale and the Trinity Repertory Singers. Based upon texts from the Lutheran Bible and the Apocrypha, the Brahms' Requiem is considered one of the most important choral compositions of all time, noted for its beauty, musical complexity and central themes of hope and redemption. The program features vocal soloists Allison Armerding, soprano; Chris Withrow, baritone; and pianists Lois Nichols and Jeremiah Trujillo. The choirs are conducted by Dr. Hoffmann Urquiza Pereira, music deparment chair and director of choral activities at Simpson University. The Chorale is an auditioned mixed ensemble specializing in advanced vocal and choral techniques. It is the vocal touring group of Simpson University, traveling in the U.S. and abroad. The Trinity Repertory Singers is a community chorus sponsored and hosted by Simpson University. American West Experience The Orland Art Gallery will bey presenting The American West Experience, featuring Cheryl Caldwell, Jamie Means, Carl Ciliax and George Turnbull 3-7 p.m. Friday, April 5. Not to mention the exquisite menu of delicious food, delightful piano entertainment by Martin Trang and as usual, the free parking. This show will be up for April and May. Mark May 11 on your calendar as the date of the unveiling of the bronze statue we have been anxiously awaiting. 'Leader of the Pack' auditions The community is invited to come view the quilts. The shop is now serving lunch and the current menu offers fresh food consisting of homemade salads, soups and sandwiches made from Classic Film Series State Theatre For The Arts presents the first film of their 2013 Classic Film Series to be presented on the second Sunday of the month, April through August. After that you can see them at the Sun Country Quilters 2013 Quilt Show on Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tehama District Fairground. Open auditions for the 2013 Shasta College Summer Musical, The Leader of the Pack — The Ellie Greenwich Musical will be from 7-9 p.m. April 18-20, in the Shasta College Theater. Auditions are open to the community, cast ages range from the teens to seniors, and cast members earn transferable college credits. Triumphant Quartet concert Whinny and Roses benefit The biggest fundraising event Safe Haven Horse Rescue has ever held is scheduled for Saturday, April 6 — the first Whinny & Roses Spring Gala at Fusaro Hall, Shasta District Fairgrounds, 1890 Briggs St. in Anderson. The night includes a prime rib dinner, full bar, dancing, raffles and live auction. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 each or a table of 10 guests for $375.
