While there are hundreds of beautiful flowers at the nursery to select from, maybe it isn't the sense of sight but the sense of smell that should be used to find that garden treat. Below are listed five aromatic shrubs that can create a symphony of fragrance in the garden. Place the aromatic plants beside a deck, patio, along a path where they will be brushed against or under a bedroom window, as long as everyone sleeping in the bedroom appreciates the scent. The Mexican Orange Blossom (Choisya 'Aztec Pearl') is a hardy evergreen shrub with scented palmate leaves and white flowers. One of the best shrubs for year round scent. Shelter from strong winds. Prune it to shape right after the first flowering. The Banana shrub (Michelia figo) has creamy yellow flowers resembling small magnolias with a strong fruity scent. The bloom is heaviest in March through May with scattered blooms through summer. Plant this dense slow-grower in a sunny, wind-free spot in rich well-drained soil and provide ample water. A citrus, 'Bouquet de Fleurs' is a sour orange variety with highly fragrant flower clusters. In southern France, it is used to make perfume. The bloom is heaviest in the winter and early spring and the dense foliage is a deep green. The orange is a medium-sized bitter fruit which is good for making marmalade. The fruit often hangs on the tree long enough to overlap the next seasons flowering. The citrus is a shrub or small tree which can grow up to 8 feet. A dwarf variety is a good container plant. If you want to buy it, the nursery may need to order it. The Gardenia shrub (G. jasminoides) is an old favorite with white flowers. The best-known variety is G.j. 'Mystery' with four to five inch double flowers. Grow it where there is some shade in the valley area of California but it can be in full sun on the coast. Gardenias may bloom from May into summer or later depending on the cultivar. The Mock orange (Philadelphus) is a group of vigorous, mostly deciduous shrubs that bear clusters of white flowers with a fresh sweet fragrance reminiscent of orange blossoms. Sweet mock orange (P. coronarIus), grows eight to ten feet tall and blooms in June. The 'Dwarf Minnesota Snowflake' (P. virginalis) grows up to three feet and has double flowers. It needs to be planted in part shade in the hot inland areas. Prune every year after flowering and thin out the oldest wood to the base. Have fun trying a few of the aromatic shrubs or go to the nursery and see what they have to offer. Red Bluff Garden Club's annual Flower Show and Plant Sale is from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday May 4. We hope to see you there. The public is also welcome to attend the informative programs. On Tuesday, April 30, at 1p.m. at 12889 Baker Road the program is on "The Art of Pressed Flowers" by Gary Jenson. For questions call 527-4578 or 384-1913. The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with National Garden Clubs Inc., California Garden Clubs Inc., Pacific Region and Cascade District. Even if there is some reason for their rude behavior, that is not an excuse. They also were unappreciative of your generosity, although that may have created some awkwardness that contributed to the problem. It's fine for you to remain in contact with Evan, but don't plan any more vacation trips. If Evan should bring up the possibility of getting the families together again, simply say that he and his kids seemed uninterested in spending time with you before, so you think it's best not to repeat the experience. Dear Annie: I'm 26 years old, happily married and have a beautiful 2-yearold daughter. My oldest brother is an alcoholic. He was in a terrible auto accident last year and nearly died. I don't want to enable him by continuing to welcome him into my life. I've tried to explain this to my parents and my sister, but my words fall on deaf ears. Last month, my brother and I got into an argument at my parents' house because he is jealous that I have a better relationship with his children than he does. It ended with me saying, ''Stay out of my life.'' Now, I'm the black sheep of the family while the others still welcome my brother with open arms. I love him, but I can't deal with watching him kill himself. Am I wrong to walk away? — Loving Sister in Missouri Dear Sister: This isn't about right or wrong. It's about what you can live with. Tell your parents that you are contacting Al-Anon ( a l - a n o n . a l a t e e n . o rg ) because you want to do what's best for your brother and also for your family. It will help you deal with your brother and at the same time let your parents know that you care about him. Dear Annie: ''Sticky'' said she's having a hard time in Florida because people don't use their air conditioning. We moved to Florida 40 years ago. It took us a couple of years to get acclimated, and our electric bill was an incentive to be moderate with the thermostat. A few years ago, we moved from humid Florida to bone-dry Arizona, and that has been a harder adjustment. Not everyone has the same definition of comfortable. — Old Man Gone West
