I love this proverb: "The Best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." Not that I totally agree with this proverb; maybe the second best time would have been 19 years ago! But, anyhow... If you planted that tree all those years ago, you'd have a beautiful mature tree today. We can't go back in time, but we can start a new proj- ect, make goals, (or plant a tree) today that will grow and fl ourish... so what are you waiting for? As we begin the new year, many of us use this time to refl ect upon the past and make an effort to im- prove ourselves. Susan Weinschenk Ph.D. of Brain Wise, offers easy steps when making New Year's resolutions; "You MUST pick a small action. "Get more exercise" is not small. "Eat healthier" is not small. This is a big reason why New Year's reso- lutions don't work. If it's a habit and you want a new one it MUST be something really small. For ex- ample, instead of "Get more exer- cise" choose "Walk 1/3 more than I usually do." These are relatively small actions." "You MUST attach the new ac- tion to a previous habit. Figure out a habit you already have that is well established, for example, if you al- ready go for a brisk walk 3 times a week, then adding on 10 more min- utes to the existing walk connects the new habit to an existing one. "You MUST make the new action EASY to do for at least the fi rst week. Because you are trying to establish a conditioned response, you need to practice the new habit from the existing stimulus from 3 to 7 times before it will "stick" on its own." If you take these three steps and you practice them 3 to 7 days in a row your new habit will be estab- lished. Let us resolve to live a good life, a full life, a loving life – a life that is worthy of having said at the end our days, "Yes, I have lived." Let us all resolve to live; to be as happy as we can be; to do as much as we can with what we have, to endure what we must, and to enjoy this gift that we have been given. So what are you waiting for? "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." – Chinese Proverb The Quartzsite Fire District will be burning the Brush Pile located at 2054 N. Central Blvd. near the Waste Water Treatment Plant.
