December 22 - 28, 2019 WHATS UP! T5 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media Come on down: CBS and "The Price Is Right" are em- bracing the season of giving this week with two charity-fo- cused, celebrity-themed prime- time specials. Airing Sunday, Dec. 23, "The Price Is Right at Night: A Holi- day Extravaganza With the Cast of 'SEAL Team'" is the first of two hour-long night- time editions that have a place in CBS's prime-time lineup this week. And this one is all about helping the military. Active-duty military mem- bers and veterans will be in the audience as the cast of the CBS military drama — including se- ries lead David Boreanaz (you might also know him from "Bones") — will play for Head- strong Project. The charity provides cost-free and stigma- free mental health care for post-9/11 veterans and their families. "The Price Is Right at Night: A Holiday Extravaganza With Seth Rogen" airs the following night (Monday, Dec. 22). Rogen ("Knocked Up," 2007) co- founded Hilarity for Charity with wife Lauren, and that's whom he'll be playing for. The national non-profit organiza- tion is dedicated to raising awareness for Alzheimer's dis- ease and accelerating progress in care, research and support. Drew Carey ("The Drew Carey Show") will host both specials, and it's a glimpse of what's to come. CBS has al- ready announced its intentions of airing more prime-time edi- tions of "The Price Is Right" in 2020, though there's no news yet on themes or celebrity in- volvement (though there will likely be some). A whole new (zombie) world: Can't get enough of AMC's "The Walking Dead" or "Fear the Walking Dead"? Get ready for "The Walking Dead: World Beyond." That's the title of the third series set in the "Walking Dead" universe. Co-creator Scott M. Gimple, who served as "Walking Dead" showrunner for Seasons 4 through 8 (he's now chief content officer), gave fans an early Christmas gift when he announced the ti- tle on Instagram. But in a one-two punch of big news, a teaser trailer released the next day revealed that Em- my-winning actress Julia Or- mond ("Witches of East End") stars in this second spinoff se- ries. She'll be playing the role of Elizabeth, who has been de- scribed as a "charismatic lead- er of a large, sophisticated and formidable force." Other cast members include Annet Ma- hendru ("The Americans") as Huck, Aliyah Royale ("The Red Line") as Iris, and Nico Tor- torella ("Younger") as Felix. The aforementioned "force" includes the first generation raised in the post-zombie apoc- alypse universe. Many of these new characters may not have had their lives upended quite as dramatically as Daryl Dixon or Rick Grimes, but that doesn't make them easy prey. Gimple explained the con- cept earlier this year while ap- pearing at New York Comic Con, as reported by The Holly- wood Reporter. "They're aware of walkers, they haven't inter- acted with them," Gimple said. "They are affected in different ways by what happened. They don't remember much of a world without walkers. This is the normal world for them." "The Walking Dead: World Beyond" will premiere in spring 2020, after its parent se- ries returns from a hiatus to conclude its 10th season. 'Soul' returns: Look for big names such as Elton John, James Brown and Dick Clark to pop up in storylines when BET's "American Soul" returns in February. "American Soul" is a nostal- gic ride that peels back the curtain on the cultural phe- nomenon known as "Soul Train," which aired from 1971 to 2006. But as Season 1 showed us, it's more about the entrepreneur behind the "hip- pest trip in America," budding mogul Don Cornelius (played by Sinqua Walls, "The Breaks"). According to Deadline, Sea- son 2 will pick up the story two years after last season's finale, in 1975. Viewers have already seen how Cornelius launched his lo- cal dance show and turned it into an L.A.-based nationally syndicated program (though the local show continued in Chicago for a while). But with great success comes great responsibility, and plenty of drama. Season 2 will show how Cornelius deals with the trappings of fame and the im- pact on his personal life, while also contending with industry egos (his own included). Darius McCrary — '90s kids will remember him as Eddie Winslow on "Family Matters" — will guest star as James Brown. Alex Ball ("NCIS") will appear as Dick Clark, whose "Soul Unlimited" venture put him at odds with Cornelius. Hudson Thames ("Mad Men") will play a young Elton John, who begs to appear on "Soul Train." Other familiar faces (or names, since they'll be played by actors) include Richard Pry- or, June Pointer of the Pointer Sisters, Bootsy Collins, the eclectic Sly Stone, George Clin- ton, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and many more.
