NFL 49ers, Asomugha reach 1-year deal SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha reached agreement on a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday that could pay him as much as $3 million this year. Asomugha's representative, Ben Dogra, said that Asomugha is expected to sign his new deal Wednesday. He was busy taking high school students around his native Bay Area on Tuesday in an effort to show them their future options and college choices. The contract has no guaranteed money. Asomugha is due to earn a base package of $1.35 million with salary and bonuses, and could make an additional $1.65 million in incentives for playing time, awards such as the Pro Bowl and reaching the playoffs. ''He's excited to be a 49er and feels it's a great football team, and he's returning home,'' Dogra said in a phone interview. ''It's such a unique set of circumstances that he's coming back. It's not about the money for him. He wants to play for a winner. He had a very good visit with them 10 days ago and again over the weekend. He thinks they have a great chance to win a Super Bowl and he wants to be part of it. He has a chip on his shoulder, in a good way.'' The former All-Pro was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on March 12 after two disappointing seasons — and now he is ready to help the 49ers return to the Super Bowl and win after losing 34-31 to the Ravens on Feb. 3 in New Orleans. Now, he gets another start right back where his football career began. The 31-year-old Asomugha spent his first eight NFL seasons, from 2003-2010 with the Oakland Raiders, who selected him 31st overall in the first round of the 2003 draft out of nearby California in Berkeley. He made three Pro Bowls during his time with Oakland. Playing in the 49ers' talented secondary means more to Asomugha at this stage of his career than a hefty pay day. Before his release in Philadelphia on the first day of free agency last month, he had been due to make $15 million this season, including $4 million guaranteed, after signing a $60 million, fiveyear deal with the Eagles in 2011. ''He believes in karma and timing,'' Dogra said. ''He wants to show everybody it's not about the money for him. He wants to prove something. He could have walked away and retired. He wants to play for a winner. He's inspired. He wants to be part of a great team and take care of unfinished business from last year. He wants to end this on his terms. Hopefully, he can get a ring and stay happy.'' Sharks trade Clowe to Rangers for 3 picks SAN JOSE (AP) — Through his own ferocious play, Ryane Clowe taught his San Jose Sharks teammates the spirit of toughness and sticking together. The New York Rangers are counting on that very hard-nosed player doing the same thing as he moves across the country to join another contender. New York acquired the fiery forward from the Sharks for three draft picks Tuesday, ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline. To save space under the salary cap, the Sharks made the tough call to part ways with a versatile leader in both the locker room and on the ice. ''He's one of these guys that's feared and respected, he's tough as nails, he can play the game, he's a great teammate, and he's a pending unrestricted free agent,'' San Jose president and general manager Doug Wilson said. ''As a player and a teammate, teammates know he has their back and he's just a tremendous heart-and-soul competitor.'' The Sharks receive the Rangers' secondround pick and a third-round pick in the 2013 draft, and a conditional second-round pick in the 2014 draft. ''We are extremely pleased to be able to acquire Ryane,'' Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said. ''He is a unique combination of size, skill and toughness. His strong leadership and character make him a tremendous addition to our organization on and off the ice.'' If Clowe re-signs with the Rangers or the team wins two playoff rounds, the pick remains New York's 2014 second-round selection. If neither occurs, the pick becomes New York's fifth-round 2014 selection. While Clowe hasn't scored a goal this season, he has 11 assists in 28 games. The rugged right winger has long been considered the heart of the franchise. He was originally selected by San Jose in the sixth round of the 2001 draft and leaves the Sharks ninth on the team's career points list with 271. He waived his no-trade clause to join a Rangers team that entered Tuesday holding the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. NFL Raiders trade Palmer to Cardinals TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have acquired quarterback Carson Palmer from the Oakland Raiders. The Cardinals gave up a conditional seventhround 2014 draft pick and swapped one of their sixth-round picks this year for Oakland's seventh-round selection. Palmer reworked his contract as part of his move to the desert, agreeing to a two-year deal worth up to $20 million, with $10 million guaranteed. If Palmer starts at least 13 games next season, Oakland gets Arizona's 2014 seventhround pick. If he doesn't, the Cardinals owe the Raiders nothing. New Arizona coach Bruce Arians gets a starting quarterback at a bargain basement price. But at least the Raiders have the prospect of getting something for the quarterback rather than just releasing him. Oakland acquired quar- terback Matt Flynn on Monday in a deal that sent two draft picks to the Seahawks. The 33-year-old Palmer put up big numbers with the Raiders last season but the production didn't translate into sufficient wins. In 15 games in 2012, Palmer threw for 4,018 yards, becoming the second quarterback in Raiders history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season. He threw for 22 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. His abilities fit the ''throw long downfield'' philosophy of Arians, who inherited a team with a woeful situation at quarterback. Last year, Arizona had four starting quarterbacks — John Skelton, Kevin Kolb, Ryan Lindley and Brian Hoyer. They combined to throw for 3,383 yards with 11 touchdowns and 21 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 63.1 in an offense that ranked last in the NFL. The Arizona quarterbacks were sacked 58 times in 608 pass attempts. By contrast, Palmer was sacked 28 times last year in 585 throws. The Cardinals have released Skelton and Kolb and have signed Hoyer to a tender offer. They also have signed free agent Drew Stanton, the backup last season to Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, where Arians was interim head coach. Palmer was the first overall draft pick in 2002 by Cincinnati and was with the Bengals until his trade to Oakland two years ago. In two seasons with the Raiders, he started 24 games, completed 61 percent of his passes for 6,771 yards and 35 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. His career passer rating is 85.5. ''We'd like to thank Carson Palmer for his services over the past two seasons,'' Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a news release, ''and we wish him well with the Cardinals.'' For his career, Palmer has completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 29,465 yards and 189 touchdowns with 132 interceptions.
