Jonathan Fowler isn't afraid to embarrass himself by sharing stories about financial mistakes he's made throughout his life as he teaches financial education classes to the youth of North Alabama. Fowler is the manager of Redstone Federal Credit Union's Financial Education Program. He's been teaching financial education for more than 11 years. Recently, he was honored by the National Youth Involvement Board for reaching the highest number of individuals with an education program. "When I started, this was somewhat of a new position," Fowler said. "Redstone wanted someone to provide free financial education to schools, nonprofits, and organizations that work with youth between kindergarten and college.'' And that's exactly what he does with his own flair and fun, interactive presentations. "I strive to be relatable and share stories where I have messed up and made mistakes," Fowler says. "When students and adults hear you have messed up also, then that breaks down barriers." One personal story he shares is about spending for 'needs vs wants' and an incredible pair of shoes. "While in middle school, I saved up for a pair of Reebok Pumps after Dee Brown won the Slam-Dunk contest while 'pumping' up his shoes," Fowler says. "I saved up and bought a pair thinking I would be able to dunk. Unfortunately I tried to dunk and hit the pole that holds up the goal … while wearing my pumps."
