Manning '04 Marilyn Merz* W e are incredibly grateful for the following donors who have generously donated to the Illinois Alpha Foundation in the spring of 2019. Donors are listed alphabetically by last name within their graduation year. Those marked with an asterisk donated the the New Member GPA Scholarship Fund as part of the 50-something reunion. By supporting the Illinois Alpha Foundation, you are funding undergraduate scholarship programs and continued maintenance and impartments to our facility. The undergraduate brothers are grateful for and proud of the support they receive from their alumni. 3 Why SigEp Jim McGreevy '69 lived in a dorm his first year at Illinois and decided early on he wanted a change. "There was something that resonated about the guys in the SigEp house. I liked the fact there seemed to be a broad range of interests; it wasn't strictly focused on sports or social for example." Prep for Life "As I reflect on learning experiences that helped me in my career and life in general, my time in the house had more practical and lasting value than most any of the courses I took." Jim can say with some degree of certainty that sentiment is shared by many in his era. Jim and his brothers were autonomous and self-reliant. "We managed our own finances, kitchen, cleaning and upkeep, maintenance, and social, alumni, and philanthropic functions." They may not have known how to do everything, but they learned by trying, making mistakes, and sharing improvements. They didn't realize it at the time, but they were teaching each other teamwork, creativity, cooperation, dealing with differences, and leadership. Preserving the Brotherhood "We had our first reunion, 20-Something, in 1989 and have met for a weekend basically every five years since!" Jim notes they represent mostly men from 1964 to 1974, but all SigEps are welcome. The group has followed the same reunion format over the years, which involves meeting and eating together, house and campus tours, football games, trivia contests, house barbecues, serenades, and sharing bios, photos, Jim McGreevy '69 Cherishes SigEp Reunions Jim enjoys his time with brothers at their 50-Something reunion. Prior to leaving the house, brothers had a traditional front door group photo followed by a rousing singing and "serenade" led by Mark Radi '71 and Bob Williams '71. old movies, and memories. You can view several of their reunion photos on the Illinois Alpha website illinois.sigep.org. Mike "Surf" Andrews '69 compiled an awesome 50-Something Special Edition archive of memories on paper and digitally, which features individual undergraduate to current photos with bios, stories, pictures, composites, and information from their undergraduate days, as well as past reunions. SigEp Snowbirds For the last 10 years, the group of about eight brothers has had an annual and growing migration of Illinois Alpha SigEps to the Naples, Fla., area. They gather for lunches, dinners, beach days, boat rides, nature hikes, birthdays, and pizza parties. They also give back to the community by building cabinets for Habitat for Humanity and walking the Harry Chapin Hunger Drive. Illinois Alpha at Heart Following each of the "Something" reunions, the group makes a gift to the chapter. "In 2009, we contributed for a great hall rug. In 2014, we got the the illuminated badge over the Chapter House front door restored and installed. In 2019, the 50-Something group financially supported the live-in house/academic scholarship with $9,000." Jim and his wife, Marybeth, enjoy traveling and have visited all 50 states, eight of 10 Canadian provinces, and 40 of the now 61 National Parks. They enjoy hiking, biking, camping, boating, and creating fused and stained glass. They also love spending time with their three sons and spouses, along with their six grandchildren. "We look forward to a 55-Something Reunion, annual Chicago-area summer lunches, and snowbirding in Florida." Jim can be reached at mcgreevy@ameritech.net. Jim and his wife, Marybeth.
