GAMMA CHI 3 O ur advisory board team is still nine strong, but we are actively recruiting more members. I can't think of a better way to become involved with the fraternity than to help undergraduate members as they become young men and future leaders. e advisory board sponsors yearly career nights, speaking engagements, workshops for interview skills and resume building, and Senior Knight dinners to send off our brothers into the real world. e chapter's enrollment is quite high in the 70s, although many of these are live- outs right now, and Gamma Chi's recruitment efforts remain strong. If you have any desire to help with a one-time event or ongoing board membership, please contact Doug Ichikawa '78 at (425) 999-9550 or via email at dsichi@yahoo.com. Love, honor, truth, Doug Ichikawa '78 Alumni Advisory Board dsichi@yahoo.com Alumni Involvement Equals Success Kitchen Renovations and Other Projects in the Works T he Greek system at UW has seen new member numbers decline over the past several years for a variety of reasons. e largest issue facing most of the 28 fraternities on campus is ag- ing facilities. e University of Washington is rebuilding old dormitories into new, modern living facilities with many amenities. Parents are key stakeholder in the decision on where they want their son to live and when you compare the new dorms to many of the fraternities, the decision is an easy one. To keep up, several fraternities are investing millions of dollars to compete with the UW's housing program. Here are a few of the chapters that are making this level of investment. 2019 New Chapter Members Project/Plans Phi Gamma Delta 27 Completed a $2.2 million facility improvement project. Alpha Delta Phi 27 Planning a $4 million renovation. Alpha Sigma Phi 20 Moved their actives into the abandoned Delta Chi house to complete a major renovation. Sigma Phi Epsilon 27 Planning to tear down their old house and build a new one. e Clubhouse's No. 1 priority in 2020 is to complete a major renovation of the kitchen. ere has not been a major investment in this critical house amenity in over 50 years. e kitchen has several cities of Seattle health and safety code improvements that must get completed in 2020. e fire department threatened to shut down the kitchen if the stove exhaust hood and system were not upgraded this year. While we can fund this $50,000 project without going into debt, this project will use up the savings we had built up over the past couple years, giving us a limited budget in 2020 for new projects. e Gamma Chi Clubhouse plans to add a urinal in the "Sink Room" on the second floor and a few other small projects around the house. e kitchen project will take place over Christmas break. We have estimated that a new kitchen and dining room project will cost approximately $400,000. Please contact us if you have questions or suggestions on how we can renovate the kitchen without taking on debt. Our fall member class is up to 13 candidates, seven of whom signed their bids this quarter. Our recruitment process has new life to it; aer a slow summer we have been spurred by greater motivation now that school is back in session. Gamma Chi Joins the Circle On October 30, we hosted a Halloween event to raise money for Circle of Friends, a charity supporting mental health. One of our members serves on the board. We raised over $750, which is almost $150 more than last year. Chapter members wore costumes in the Halloween spirit. Green Greeks Gamma Chi Chapter has three members who are a part of Green Greeks. Green Greeks' purpose is to make quantitative differences in our community in how we reduce, reuse, and recycle. Some initiatives include pushing for compostable trash bags to be more accessible, as well as hosting empty can drives to promote recycling. Our Future Is Bright In 2020, we will maintain having a Sigma Nu hold a position on the IFC executive council. Ivan Trindev '19 has been elected IFC direc- tor of finance and administration. Gamma Chi is thriving both internally and externally and the future of the chapter is brighter than ever. I am excited to see what spring will bring as our recruitment efforts gain momentum. We have set a firm foundation regarding recruitment and seek scholarly individuals whose values closely align with those of Sigma Nu.
