checkout of Titan III solid rocket motors. Dean was a founding member of the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and supported the chapter throughout its 55-year history. Dean nurtured his passion for growing dahlias, growing more than 800 plants annually. As a Monterey Bay Dahlia Society member, he hybridized and propagated 23 new varieties. His most notable, and proudest variety, he named MAB after the love of his life, Mary Alys Barnes. Dean will be remembered for the deep love he had for his wife, for his independent spirit, generosity and helpful nature, for making a difference in the lives of the people he touched, and for his immense and gentle kindness to all. Norman E. Waggoner '43-492, of Palo Alto, CA, passed away on January 16, 2019, just 9 days shy of his 71 st wedding anniversary with his wife, Winette. She writes, 'Norman's engineering work in the environmental field stressed clean water and clean air for all of us.' Norman served as a lieutenant in the United States naval reserve and had a successful career as a civil engineer. Norman's achievements included designing the Salmon Creek sewage system in Clark County, WA; conceptual design of the 14 MW mass burning power plant in Brooks, OR; and the site selection and conceptual design of Djakarta Airports in Indonesia. He was a life member of several organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, Water Environmental Federation, and the American Waterworks Association. His interests included fly-fishing, scuba diving and traveling. Gerald R. "Dick" Hewett '47-536 passed away in Richland, WA, on April 8, 2019, at age 91. Dick was born in Tillamook, OR, where he enjoyed the company of nearby relatives in his early years—including his cousin, Fred Brauti '48-558. After attending Oregon State, he went to dental school at Oregon Health Sciences University and enlisted in the Army. Following his graduation from dental school, Dick returned from boot camp one day before his marriage to Fawn Brooks, whom he met at OSU. After his discharge, he set up a private practice for children's dentistry in Richland. He participated in many community activities, including fundraising for the construction of the YMCA pool. He also became an astute investor—a skill he would use later in life to manage the portfolio for the cemetery fund. He also found time to pursue and obtain a private pilot's license. Donald H. Swartz '47-528 passed away on July 6, 2019. Don was born in Fresno, CA. He was the son of Frederick and Hazel Swartz, and the youngest of six children. Don served in the U.S. Navy during WWII after graduating from Fresno High School. He had two daughters and led a career in industrial and related engineering. Don and his wife, Susan, enjoyed playing golf and bocce ball. He was active in the Rossmoor Woodshop, the Men's Exercise Group, and the Golden State Club. Calvin L. Cox '49-566 passed way at his home in Kalama, WA, on March 2, 2019. Cal was a World War II veteran. When Japan surrendered, he became part of the first occupation forces in Japan stationed in Morioka, Iwate, Japan. After his discharge, he attended Oregon State University, where he met his wife, Mary Moynihan. Cal worked in lumber mills in Portland, Springfield, and Roseburg, OR, and moved to Kalama in 1961, where he worked in sales at Pope and Talbot Plywood. After the mill closed, he became a licensed real estate agent and notary. He opened Arrow Real Estate and maintained his broker's license until his death. Cal and Mary traveled extensively, visiting Europe, the British Isles, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Japan, Canada, and most of the United States. He was active in community government, serving three terms as port commissioner for the Port of Kalama, and was instrumental in the revitalization of the City of Kalama waterfront. He was past president of the Kalama Chamber of Commerce, fire commissioner for Kalama Fire District 5, and served on the Cowlitz County Planning Board, Board of Equalization, Substance Abuse Advisory Board, and the Veterans Advisory Board. Gerald C. Doblie '53-628, longtime resident of the Portland area, passed away on October 15, 2018. He was an active member of the Oregon State bar association for more than 50 years, with a private practice as a trial lawyer. His family wrote that Jerry advocated for the fair treatment of his clients and lived his life in service of others. "His legacy lives on through his family, who will never forget his kindness, selfless humility, and everlasting spirit." Jerry was married to his wife, Patricia, for 41 years. ALPHA LAMBDA REMEMBERS (Continued from page 3) Andrew M. Nygaard '49-583 celebrated his 90th birthday in June and is semi-retired. His two sons now run his business, Warrenton Fiber, and Andrew continues serving in an advisory position. He lives in Astoria, OR. Email: marive@aol.com Gordon H. Loren and his wife, Barbara, celebrated their 58th anniversary on November 11. They are both retired and reside in Moraga, CA. Email: wdspnr@gmail.com John A. Hoien Jr. '59-713 retired in 2009 to be a caregiver for his wife, Betty. They had another 10 years together until her passing in January. John is getting into kayaking and pickleball and is "still in pretty good health with the help of medical additives." He lives in Santa Maria, CA. Email: jhoien@aol.com David "Mike" Courtney '64-744 spent his adult life as an independent insurance agent in The Dalles, OR, where he still resides. He serves on the board of directors of Wasco County Nursing Care and Columbia Basin Care and as a commissioner for Port of The Dalles. Michael J. Buroker '66-784 is still practicing law. In the summer, he enjoys working with his plants and flowers, wine-tasting, hiking, and continually improving his collector car.
