8A Daily News Saturday, March 30, 2013 Agriculture farm & ranch Celebrating youth athletic achievements The sports pages of our local newspapers have colored pictures and large headlines about the Spartan Varsity Softball games, Red Bluff opens league with 2 wins. DN Sports editor Andre Byik wrote: Against the visiting Enterprise Hornets on Tuesday, the Spartans gave up two runs in two games and swept a Sac River League-opening doubleheader 4-2 and 3-0, respectively. But not a mention about the SparJean tan Junior Varsity softball team that opened their Sac River League-opening double header against the visiting Enterprise Hornets 19-1 and 10-0, respectively under Coach Randy Watt. I was present with the parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers and friends to watch 16 hardworking, cleancut, smart freshman and sophomore girls play their games. After watching the San Francisco Giants with Bill for many years I appreciated the way our girls caught pop flys, the bunts, and the way they can pitch a ball to put out an opponent, not to mention their batting. Probably I used the wrong terminology to describe the action since I am more familiar with rodeo terms. They will resume playing after Easter break, with a double header at West Valley High at 3 p.m. on April 9th, and West Valley will be in Red Bluff Friday, April 12th at 4 p.m. Come out and enjoy a game. Tues. April 16th Foothill High at Palo Cedro comes to Red Bluff for a double header at 3 p.m. April 23rd at 4 p.m. for the team at Foothill High. April 30th, will be a double header at Shasta High at 3p.m. and Friday, May 3rd Shasta comes to Red Bluff at 4 p.m. May 7th is last home game at 4 p.m. with Orland High, and there is a game scheduled for May 8th at Pleasant Valley High at 4 p.m. Toni Brunello, is the scorekeeper, who keeps track of balls, strikes, errors, runs and keeps the umpire honest. Be sure to bring a chair, a bottle of water, some snacks, and ready to join the girls in their chatter from the dugout as our girls come up to bat. Free admission, and lots of fun watching the future varsity players. I had thought that high school rodeo was a rough sport, but Morgan Waddel is on crutches after breaking three bones in her foot, sliding into home last week at the tournament in Chico. Granddaughter Jenny was playing 2nd base in the same tournament when she was cleated by three different runners. Once on the big toe that lost the toenail when her steer stepped on it at the fair. That resulted in a trip to Urgent Care for an infection in the toe after the next days game. Now the toe is better, but she was cleated from knee to ankle, and that leg has deep bruises. She is limping and out of the lineup. Barton Courtesy photo The Red Bluff Spartan Junior Varsity Softball team has not been recognized by the media this spring.
