N O T E S O F T H E L Y R E | P A G E 2 A s many of you are aware, we launched Phi Chapter's annual campaign this spring. Our hope is that through alumnae support we can continue providing valuable opportunities, educational experiences, and lasting memories for today's undergraduate members. We are truly grateful for the sisters who have already contributed to our annual campaign, and we hope that even more will take a leap and lend a much-needed hand. No donation is too small—gifts of any size make an immediate impact on the future of Phi Chapter members and our beloved sisterhood as a whole. Contributions allow the house corporation to keep the chapter house in working order and ensure that it promotes a safe living and learning environment that allows the undergraduates to thrive and "Seek the Heights." If you would like to give back to Phi Chapter today, please make checks payable to Phi Chapter House Corporation. Gifts can be sent to the following address: Phi Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega House Corporation Board P.O. Box 44023 Lawrence, KS 66044-4223 Please note that gifts are not tax deductible, and a receipt will be provided. To alumnae who have already given back to the chapter—thank you for being a leader for Phi. Empowered by AΧΩ to Make a Difference Carrie Emert '94 Committed to Raising Domestic Violence Awareness A lthough sorority recruitment was a foreign and intimidating process for Carrie Emert '94, she found Alpha Chi Omega to be incredibly warm and welcoming. Little did she know how much AΧΩ would change her life for the better. "It just felt like home from the very start," she shared. "The women were authentic, funny, diverse, and smart, which all seemed like terrific reasons to be a member of Phi Chapter." Being a member of Alpha Chi afforded Carrie leadership opportunities that enabled her to thrive and equipped her with a safety net during her undergraduate years. "By assuming the positions of social chairman, recruitment counselor, and Rock Chalk Revue chairman, I learned what being an effective and motivating leader in an organization requires," Carrie stated. "I am fortunate that I lived with a diverse portfolio of women from many different religious, geographic, educational, and ethnic backgrounds, who I learned so much from and continue to do so today." Her cumulative Alpha Chi experience helped shape the person she is today and ultimately paved her career path. Carrie began her career at the NCAA working in collegiate sports for eight years before switching gears to NASCAR. After 18 years living and working in Georgia and North Carolina, she started her own sponsorship and events company in Kansas City in 2015. Most recently, Carrie joined Safehome as their director of development, bringing her back to her Alpha Chi roots. In this capacity, she oversees events, community engagement, marketing, and communications for the largest domestic violence shelter in Kansas and the only facility in Johnson County. "While I've been so fortunate to enjoy an amazing career that many people dream of, I want to continue learning and evolving my network of advocates and building relationships with influencers in our community, including Alpha Chi Omegas," she said. "Safehome is helping me reacquaint myself with Kansas City and hopefully making a significant positive impact by eliminating domestic violence in our city." Carrie has undoubtedly stayed true to AΧΩ's national altruism of raising awareness and educating others about domestic violence. "The most rewarding attribute of my role is seeing the women and children living in our shelter thriving and happy, knowing they are safe and cared for at Safehome. Having a positive environment for them to restart their lives without fear is why I'm inspired to work every day on their behalf. The most challenging aspect of my job is increasing awareness of domestic violence because it is a very difficult topic to talk about. Because we are an organization that relies solely on private funding to exist, we need everybody to be brave enough to acknowledge domestic violence and work every day to break the silence." To learn more about Safehome and how you can make a difference through volunteering, special events, awareness campaigns, donation drives and more, email Carrie at carrie.emert@safehome-ks.org and visit the website at www.safehome-ks.org. If you could summarize AΧΩ in three words, what would they be? Inspiring, Influential, Remarkable What is one of your favorite memories from living in the Alpha Chi house at KU? I always loved when the hundreds of sheets of party pics were delivered from the photographer. We would all sit in the living room and laugh for hours talking about the event. Truly priceless memories. I still have albums of those party pics saved in storage—I might have to dig those out sometime soon. What advice would you give to new members of AΧΩ? I'd encourage new members of AΧΩ to appreciate every single moment. Study hard, build a strong resume, help others in need, network every chance you get, make calculated and wise choices, leave no stone unturned, and be boldly proud of who you are. The collegiate experience goes by so fast, so go create amazing memories and leave a lasting legacy for the next class of women at 1500 Sigma Nu Place!
