22 www.DesertMessenger.com November 6, 2019 Our mission is to improve the lives of veterans, active-duty service members, their families, and our community. Our programs bring needed services, information and assistance to these target groups. How do we accomplish this mis- sion? We take veterans to medical appointments if they need a ride. Personal items and or food are giv- en to homeless veterans. We also assist in fi nding them a place to live if asked. We have fundraisers for money and goods (such as clothes and personal items, etc.) to meet these goals. We support the VFW comrades in their efforts in completing this mission. We assist with the break- fasts each day, taco nights, Italian nights, fi sh fry nights, distributing Buddy Poppies, and more. The Auxiliary in Quartzsite has a Book Club which meets the second Tuesday each month, which is an interesting and fun event. We also have Meat Draws every Wednesday as one of our yearly fundraisers. We are planning a Family Freedom Christmas Festival in December, which is open to the public as a free event for our community. A Garden Party Luncheon is being planned to be held in February, also open to the public. We work with the local schools and youth here. We hold car washes to help in raising mon- ies to assist the schools and youth with programs. Have you seen our Flag-bearing Cadets? To be even more effective, your help in any way that works for you would be so appreciated! You do NOT have to be a member of the VFW Comrades or Auxiliary to help veterans and our community. We have many activities going on by our VFW and Auxiliary this year in addition to those mentioned above. Look for the VFW ad in each issue for what we are doing to meet our mission of helping veterans to know they will never be forgotten. We honor our veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifi ce for our coun- try on Memorial Day, and we honor all veterans including those serving today at the Veterans Day Ceremo- ny on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. at the Planes in the Park. Join us for these activities. Would you like to be a volunteer? Are you willing to give an hour or more in your week to do so? Would you like to cook meals, serve meals to veterans and their guests? Would you like to be a bartender or spend an hour or two distributing Buddy Poppies to the public? Remember, you do NOT have to be a member of the VFW or Auxiliary to volunteer to help veterans. They will be held on the THIRD TUESDAY of the month in the Library Meeting room, start- ing at 1:30 pm. New residents are welcome to share their suggestions and concerns. The public is encouraged to attend. Topics will vary, however anyone may speak on any Town issue. The Library is located at 465 N. Plymouth Ave., Quartzsite.
