Flu cases are beginning to increase nationwide, and anyone who missed a clinic or are still in need of a fl u shot can still get one. The single best way to prevent the fl u is to get a fl u vaccination every year. The "fl u shot" is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is giv- en with a needle. About two weeks after vaccination, antibodies develop that protect against infl uenza virus infection. Flu vaccines will not pro- tect against fl u-like illnesses caused by non-infl uenza viruses. Everyone should get vaccinated as soon as the fl u vaccine becomes available each year. However, it is still benefi cial for anyone who was not vaccinated in early fall to get vaccinated later in the fall or winter because most infl uen- za activity typically occurs in January or later. Though it varies, fl u season can last as late as May, so it is never too late to get vaccinated. Everyone 6 months and older should be vaccinated every year. Even healthy people should get vaccinated because they could spread the fl u to someone who is at high risk for complications from the fl u or who is not able to get a fl u vaccine. Those who would still like to receive a fl u vaccination may visit any of the clinics posted below. To make sure a nurse is available, calling ahead is suggested and especially if driving in from any distance. Children's immunizations are free and a $10.00 donation for an adult vac- cine is appreciated, but not required.
