No. 1 singles player Thunder Shaffer, a junior, anchors a Spartans (1-4 SRL) squad that won a Northern Section title last year, but has lost key seniors to graduation. On court one, Shaffer faced West Valley High's Robert Wilcox, a tall player with a booming serve and serviceable net game. It was a contrast to Shaffer, who is more comfortable behind the baseline, running opponents corner to corner with powerful groundstrokes. Wilcox started the match strong as he broke Shaffer's service and held his own for a 2-0 lead. The advantage would be short lived. Shaffer, settling into the match, reeled off the next five games by keeping points alive longer, keeping Wilcox behind the baseline and waiting for unforced errors. "We've never played West Valley, so I didn't know what to expect," Shaffer said. "And so when I started the match I was a little tense and making errors I shouldn't have been making." Up 5-3 in the first set and on serve, Shaffer rode a two-handed backhand winner and two straight aces to 40-love before Wilcox committed an unforced error to give up the set, 6-3. The two would exchange breaks to 2-all in the second set before Shaffer broke Wilcox for the third straight game and pulled away to a 4-2 lead. Wilcox, visibly frustrated with his ground game, would hold service just once more in the match before Shaffer closed out with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Chacin, who will make his first career opening day start Monday in Milwaukee, was roughed up mainly by reserves and minor leaguers in a 6-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings, walked one and struck out four. He gave up a solo home run in the fourth inning to Jeremy Barfield and picked a man off first base in the second. Chacin left the ballpark after coming out of the game and did not meet with the media. Weiss didn't seem concerned about Chacin's outing. ''I am confident he will get command of his stuff on Monday,'' Weiss said. ''Jhoulys wasn't as sharp (on Wednesday) as he has been at times this spring. He worked trying to get out of trouble ... his change-up has been a great pitch for him, but it was not working the way he likes. His pitches were a little up.'' Chacin had been scratched from his previous scheduled start Friday due to back issues but pitched two innings of relief Saturday. He missed 97 games due to shoulder inflammation in 2012 and was 3-5 in 14 starts.
