4A Daily News – Thursday, March 28, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Symphonic Winds set for April 13 Concert CSU, Chico's premier band ensemble, The Symphonic Winds, will perform its spring semester concert, "Catfish Row," Saturday, April 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. "It's going to be an exciting concert," said band director Royce Tevis, Department of Music and Theatre faculty member. The concert will feature several guest artists and a performance by the Chico High School Band. Opening up the concert will be the Chico State Trumpet Ensemble, a group that shines a spotlight on the best trumpet players in the Symphonic Winds. The Chico High School Band, conducted by Todd Filpula, will perform several selections, including Roland Seitz's "March Grandioso," Franklin Ticheli's "Amazing Grace," and a "Tribute to Irving Berlin" (arranged by Warren Barker). "We are really lucky that music in Chico is thriving as is evident by the wonderful band program at Chico High School," said Tevis. The Chico State Wind Ensemble, an elite performance group made up of woodwinds, brass, and percussion, will perform Gershwin's "Catfish Row," a 1936 orchestral work that Gershwin based upon Courtesy photo music from his famous opera, "Porgy and Bess." Included in the work will be the songs "Summertime" "I Got Plenty of Nothing'," and "Bess You Is My Woman." "Gershwin was a very amazing composer," said Tevis. "He blended techniques of classical, opera, pop music and jazz in this work." "Catfish Row" will feature Department of Music and Theatre faculty member Daun Weiss, soprano, and local musician Bruce Haggan, baritone. "They will be singing both a bluesy and operatic interpretation of the music," said Tevis. "It is very challenging because, essentially, they have to put aside how they have been taught to sing." Other compositions performed by the Symphonic Winds include Bert Appermont's "Egmont," a work that Tevis describes as a "tone-poem" about Count Lamoral von Egmont, Prince of Gavere. "Egmont was a royal who was trained as a soldier in the Netherlands and was also a member of the Golden Fleece. Egmont's claim to fame is that he stood up to King Philip during the Everything on Your Easter List Solid Milk or Dark Chocolate Easter Bunnies, Easter Eggs and Easter Lollipops Milk, Dark, White & Chocolates Boxed Assortments • Gift Trays • Brittles Chocolate-Covered Nuts & Espresso Beans Caramel Corn • Salt Water Taffy (including sugar-free) 530 527-3026 PUMPKINLAND Inquisition. He was later captured and beheaded. His beheading is what scholars believe started the 80 Year War, which took place from 1568-1648. The work includes a Spanish section with lots of flamenco guitar, which will be performed by Department of Music and Theatre faculty member Tobin Roye. Also on tap will be a movement from Arthur Wils' Symphonic Suite, "The Fens," featuring retired Department of Music and Faculty member David Rothe playing the Centennial Pipe Organ. Brass instruments from the ensemble will also be featured. Another challenging work, said Tevis, is Alexander Arutiunian's "Concerto for Trumpet," featuring senior trumpet player Christopher Navarette. "It is a virtuosic work," said Tevis. "It requires beautiful tone, finger and tongue technique, and range. It's a very challenging, major work, not only for Chris, but also for the band. It is very Russian sounding work that only the most experienced and skilled trumpet players can perform." Advance tickets, at $15 general, $13 seniors, and $6 children/students, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333. Add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. Dana Carvey at the Cascade Be prepared for a night full of belly busting laughter as one of SNL's most talented alumni brings his standup comedy routine to Redding when Jefferson Public Radio and the Cascade Theatre present Dana Carvey at the historic Cascade Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6. The Emmy Award winning comedian is noted for his uncanny impersonations of political and show business icons, including former president George Bush, Ross Perot, Johnny Carson, Jimmy Stewart, John Travolta and Regis Philbin. He also reigned supreme during his seven-season run on Saturday Night Live, creating some of the show's most memorable characters, including Church Lady, Hans from the bodybuilding Hans & Franz duo, and Garth from Wayne's World, which took Carvey's comedy from small to big screen when the sketch was turned into a hit film. Additionally, Carvey has earned a spot on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time. Critics say his true brilliance can only be captured from his live stand-up appearances. That's what audiences should expect at his Redding show – a true comedic genius at work. Tickets are $49-69 and are available at the Cascade Theatre Box Office at 1733 Market St. in Redding, by phone at (530) 243-8877 or directly through the Cascade Theatre website at www.cascadetheatre.org.
