Red Bluff opens league with 2 wins By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor Red Bluff Highs softball team is a bit stingy. The defending section champion Spartans, at least early in the season, are notching wins on the back of their strong defense and pitching, which Red Bluff coach J Howell says has become the teams forte. Against the visiting Enterprise Hornets on Tuesday, the Spartans gave up two runs in two games and swept a Sac River League-opening doubleheader 4-2 and 3-0, respectively. In game two, the Spartans (11-3, 2-0 SRL) rode Hailee Nicholls strong, complete-game shutout from the mound to a victory that could have been closer had the Hornets not bungled a few routine plays that led to runs scored. Enterprise (4-6-1, 0-2 SRL), comparatively, showed errors in the infield lead to a loss on the scoreboard. The Hornets miscues started early as Red Bluff leadoff hitter Haley Harris reached base on an error in the first inning. No. 2 hitter Samantha Jones laid down a bunt to advance Harris but Enterprises throw to first sailed into the outfield, allowing Harris to score. Nicholls, who struck out two batsmen and gave up seven hits, had the consistent gloves of Tayler Zazueta at shortstop and Harris at second base behind her to stomp out any threats. Zazueta threw out nine at first base, notched a hit and a run scored in the game. Harris assisted on two double plays. The Spartans didnt score again until the fifth inning, when an error by Enterprises third baseman allowed Emily Larzabal to score and give Red Bluff a 2-0 lead. Larzabal, in game one, had three RBIs. An inning later, a Zazueta single turned into a double after the Hornets centerfielder fumbled the ball. Against the next batter, Enterprises throw to first was again wild and Zazueta crossed the plate after stealing third. Zazueta batted in a run in game one. (AP) San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy saw something very positive this spring training few injuries for the World Series champions. It looks like were coming out of it pretty good, Bochy said Tuesday after a 4-2 victory over San Diego in the Giants final home game of the spring at Scottsdale Stadium. The Giants will wrap up the Arizona portion of their schedule on Wednesday by playing at the Diamondbacks before returning home for a three-game Bay Bridge exhibition series with the Oakland Athletics. The only injury concern for Bochy at this point appears to be the status of third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who has been sidelined with inflammation of a nerve in his right elbow. Bochy said he is hopeful that the World Series MVP will be ready for opening day on April 1 against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. Two of Bochys top hitters this spring delivered once again. Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the fifth inning and is hitting .361. Brandon Belt, who started in left field and finished at his regular first base spot, had three hits to raise his average to .453 after sitting out two games with a mild neck strain. Marco Scutaro came up with a rare play, taking an extra base after a walk. The MVP of last years NL championship series drew a two-out walk in the third inning, sprinted to first, then kept going and stole second. You dont get that opportunity very often, said Scutaro, who also accomplished the feat in 2002 and 2009. I dont know how many years its going to take me now (to do it again). Shasta DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF Red Bluff 3 p.m. TEHAMA COUNTY At Anderson Corning Ykrea 3 p.m. NBA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Red Bluff Lady Spartans Kings Warriors Red Bluff Lady Spartans Track & Field CSNB Softball 7:30 p.m. NHL Anaheim CSNC Sharks 7 p.m. SPRING TRAINING Colorado Athletics 1:05 p.m. Giants Arizona 1:10 p.m. Follow us on Twitter for live game coverage, exclusive online articles and more. @TehamaSports Kayla Thayer Red Bluff Highs Kayla Thayer grabbed a couple of second-place finishes in the 4-kg shot up and 1-kg discuss events Friday at the Eagle Classic relays in West Valley.
