Beginning around the middle of the
20th century, Fiedler made listening to
classical music fun.

for over-popularizing classical music,
he became one of America's first pop
conductors.
"All orchestras do popular
programming," Sanders explained.
"For the longest time, pop meant movie
music or swing. But nowadays, pops
is a broad term to describe everything
that's not a symphonic repertoire –
from swing to Broadway to heavy
metal. Music is music. And a good
orchestra like ours in Fayetteville is
capable of doing anything you put in
front of them.
"ese (programs) have broad
appeal beyond your typical concert-
goer," he said. "It's important for us
to cultivate our audiences beyond the
classical music lovers."
Sanders is entering his third season
as music director for the orchestra.
He also serves as music director for
the Spartanburg (S.C.) Philharmonic
and the Central Texas Philharmonic.
He spoke of being excited that
"Heroes vs. Villains" opens the
Fayetteville season the same weekend
that the Fayetteville ComicCon is being
held. at annual celebration of pop
culture and all things geek is scheduled
Oct. 19 and 20 at the Crown Expo off
East Mountain Drive.
"When we were programming the
concert," he said, "we did not have that
in mind. It's a happy coincidence it falls
into the same weekend as ComicCon.
Where people are dressing up as heroes
and villains. We're hoping to attract
the ComicCon audience to hear some
of these great musical pieces that go
