another way to tackle the problem of hunger. "We need food," Sharon said.
Sharon, who'd come to Second Saturday by bus, planned to lug her heavy
box of food back home the same way. Two men, who'd also come by bus,
stood with her with their own boxes. Like Sharon, they said their cupboards
were mostly bare and they rely on food stamps, churches and other sources for
sustenance.
Sharon said she has epilepsy and is unable to work. Jerry, who's 62, said he
hasn't been able to work since suffering a brain aneurysm. Robert, 58, said he's
a military veteran and is trying to get his life back together aer periods of
difficulty, including homelessness. He now has a place to live, near Fort Bragg.
He said the bus ride home would take him about 2½ hours and he'd probably
give away some of the food in his box on the way, both to reduce the weighty
load and because it might go bad in the sweltering heat.
But Robert said he was grateful for what he'd still have. "is is good," he
said. He, Sharon and Jerry stood on the side of Deep Creek Road, boxes of
food on the ground beside them, waiting for the No. 3 bus to take them back
toward home where they'd now have more to eat.
