INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN There were many tell tale signs of the Fayetteville Museum of Art’s demise long before the controversy started over location or lack of Arts Council funding. To say this tragic development was foreseeable would be an understatement. The biggest and most conspicuous indicator was the frustration voiced by area artists who couldn’t understand why, after years of hard work, cultural awareness of the arts wasn’t increasing in the Fayetteville and Cumberland County community. That’s when Chris Internet Directory ............................ 12 Calendar ........................................... 14 Concert Connection ........................ 18 TV ..................................................... 19 Movie Review ..................................20 Movie Schedule ............................... 21 A Place to View Art Free Wheelin’ Feelin’ ....................... 22 News of the Weird ........................... 23 Horoscopes/Advice Goddess ......... 23 Classifieds ........................................ 24 Games .............................................. 26 Dining Guide .................................... 27 The message on the www.fayettevillemuseumart.org website gives hope that there will be a future for the Fayetteville Museum of Art. Kastner, executive director of Cape Fear Studios, Dwight Smith of FSU’s Rosenthal Gallery, and artist/educator Soni Martin got together with other like-minded artists and decided to raise the bar and get the publicity and recognition they deserved. As a result, and with the help of the Arts Council, they formed the Visual Arts Alliance. They actually have their own gallery at Gallery 208 on Rowan Street — a space, previously occupied by the Fayetteville Museum of Art. What? You didn’t know the museum had a downtown annex? Sure it did. And for six years Up & Coming Weekly partnered with them to host more than 30 art exhibits and shows recognizing artists from around the state and region, as well as many talented local artists. The exhibits were always well attended and artists had yet another venue to showcase their talent. The point here is that people respond positively to the arts. It encourages interaction, dialogue and hospitality. It defi nes who we are. The issues should be about the “arts,” not about location or buildings. I know Meridith Stiehl, current president of the Fayetteville Museum of Art, and the many board members will rally with our community leaders to assure that not only do we have an art museum, but one that reaches out to embrace all the aspects of our community. This kind of communication builds relationships and enhances community. They may have to look to objective “outside” guidance to achieve this, but that too could be a very good thing. Either way, we need to get started, now! Company is coming (BRAC). Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher. COMMENTS? Bill@upandcomingweekly.com.
