Washington Alpha Delt e A PUBLICATION OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ALUMNI OF ALPHA DELTA PHI • SUMMER 2019 Alpha Delts Create Positive Changes Update from the Building Committee T he ADPhi Building Committee is making good progress on the Chapter remodel. There are three groups actively working. The Design Group finished design development in July within the construction budget guidelines. Construction documents are to be done by early 2020. Construction will start in June 2020. The Operations Group is negotiating for facilities to board the Actives for the 2020-2021 construction period. The Finance Group is preparing loan documents for submission to lenders. Many brothers, alumni and undergraduates are deeply involved, and it's an enjoyable time working together! When completed, the Chapter House will house 100 men in a quality facility with abundant study and entertainment space. Planning the Chapter remodel has been fun, demolition and construction will be exciting, but the most important aspect of the job is still to come—operating the new Chapter House. Each of us has our own reasons to be involved. I'd like to explain my reasons and, if they resonate with you, I encourage you to get involved too. To begin, you may have noticed that a strange malaise is affecting the quality of relationships throughout the country. My class, the class of 1969, experienced a similar period of alienation that spawned conflict, hatched a counter culture, and even brought deaths to college campuses. Powerful forces of alienation and isolation are affecting young men and women again. The University of Washington is no exception. Having lived through a period of alienation that split families and friends, I do not want these forces to damage the lives of the very best and brightest among us. Believe me, the young men and women at UW are extraordinary. The ADPhi men are among the very best. Our surroundings impact the way we see the world. Despite the poor condition of the Chapter House and the discord around the country, the young men in ADPhi are building and managing a vibrant community. They are developing rules to manage their community, using their resources to create a sense of "belonging," and are sharing responsibilities, building lifelong friendships, and contributing at a time when so many others are feeling alienated. Their success is due, in part, to an active ADPhi Alumni Board. Mostly, their success is due to the character of the young men at ADPhi. I have seen young men take care of one another when stress, mental illness, suicide of a family member, and other tragedies befall an ADPhi brother. Empathy is a great sign of maturity and ADPhi creates a healthy space for young men to mature in this difficult time. In this environment, politics fall away and is replaced with a vibrant sense of belonging. It appears to be an inclusive belonging—not tribal. It translates into raising $260,000 for Children's Hospital, strong relations with UW administration and recognized leadership in grades, social life, and the greater UW community. The current executive council would say "quiet strength" is their hallmark. I call upon all alumni to support ADPhi as it creates community, character, and healthy young leaders. Our young men deserve our support. Your support can come in many ways. One way of great need is getting involved, and I encourage alumni to consider the Operations Group. They will expand their work into 2020 and 2021 with a wide range of programs that build on the successes of prior years and the current undergraduates and soon-to-be graduates at ADPhi.
