My credit is in terrible shape after facing a medical emergency and
getting behind in my payments. My finances are better now, and I
am considering hiring a credit repair company to fix my credit. Can
these companies really repair my credit quickly?
Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for cleaning up your credit – despite
what the television and radio ads may say. According to the Federal Trade
Commission, if a company promises instant results for a price, it is likely a
scam. Be suspicious of companies that ask for money up front and ask you
not to contact the credit bureaus yourself.
Here are some things you can do to repair your credit, but it won't
happen overnight:
• Get your free credit reports from all three bureaus (Experian,
TransUnion and Equifax) and review them for inaccuracies. You
can get reports free, once a year, at annualcreditreport.com or by
calling 877-322-8228.
• If you find errors, dispute them. Check your identity information and
credit history. en, write a letter to the specific credit reporting agency
showing the error and explaining the mistake.
• Going forward, pay all your bills on time, pay down credit card balances
and don't apply for new credit.
Follow these tips, and your credit will improve over time.
