4B – Daily News – Saturday, June 5, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news St. Paul Vacation Bible School registration St. Paul Lutheran Church, 455 Jefferson St., will be holding registration for Vacation Bible School from 9 to 11 a.m. on the next three Saturdays, June 5, 12 and 19 at the church. We are accepting children ages 3-12. Class size will be limited. Children must be pre-registered to attend - no registration on the first day of classes. Admission is free of charge. This year's theme is "The Egypt File - Decod- ing the Mystery of Life." There will be Bible stories, crafts, music, games and snacks. As we explore the mar- vels of ancient Egypt, we'll unravel Bible clues that lead us to discover we were specially created by God for the purpose of loving and serving Him. Grab your back- packs and join us! Registration forms may be printed from our website at www.stprb.com. Complete and mail to St. Paul Luther Church, Attn: VBS, PO Box 726, Red Bluff, CA 96080. Must be received prior to June 21. You may also contact Kathy Robertson at 527-7570 for registration and additional information. Baccalaureate Service for Red Bluff High School The community is invited to share in a Bac- calaureate Service for the Graduating Class of 2010 of the Red Bluff Union High School on Sunday, June 6, at 7 p.m. This special time of worship will be held in the Performing Arts Center on the High School cam- pus. The annual Baccalaureate Service is hosted by the Red Bluff Ministerial Association and is planned with a committee of graduating Seniors. The following Senior Students served on this year’s committee: Rhonda Anderson, Nathaniel Cook, Kerry DeFonte, Alayna Hudgens, Chelsea Johnson, Aaron Lutes, Jacob McManus, Devin Penner, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Nicole VanDyke. Mr. Kevin Penner is the High School Staff Advi- sor and Pastor Mark Franklin represented the Min- isterial Association. This unique time of worship will be led by the graduating seniors. Devin Penner, Rodriquez, and Lutes will provide instrumental leadership. "Lega- cy," will be sung by Nicole VanDyke. Challenging words will be delivered to the grad- uating seniors by Pastor Gil DeLao of Calvary Chapel and Youth Pastor Dan Ackley of the Vin- yard Fellowship. Director at Calvary Chapel. Mr. Mike Fox, R.B.U.H.S. Teacher, will share his reflections of the Senior Class from the last four years. Students from the planning committee will participate in the reading of scripture passages and sharing of personal testimonies. The evening pro- gram will close with prayers and blessings being offered by local pastors in attendance. The Baccalaureate Service was a required activ- ity of the graduating class for many years. As times have changed this service has become a unique time of worship and spiritual challenge for the Graduat- ing Seniors. The Red Bluff Ministerial Association recognizes the importance of this traditional service and appreciates the opportunity to sponsor this min- istry to the local students. The game plan Spring is upon us. The sun is shin- ing, birds are singing, trees are bud- ding and flowers blooming. Spring is a wonderful time of the year — you witness life everywhere you look! Spring also brings with it the great American sport – baseball. The game of baseball has different levels of players. Some players are just okay, some are good, and then there are the great players. Great players take care of them- selves by eating right – feeding on foods that will stick with them; exer- cising – building up the muscles in their bodies so they don’t burn out before the last inning; and getting good rest – a great player needs to get plenty of sleep so that he isn’t lethar- gic or out of shape but alert and ready. If a baseball player wants to excel in the game then sticking with the basics of discipline and practice is a must. A great player will practice the same plays over and over until they become second nature. No matter what’s going on in the game, a great player will know what to do in all sit- uations. Staying positive is a key fac- tor in keeping the morale of a team up. The last and most important aspect of a great player is one who will listen to the coach. A coach is the one who sees where a player needs to make adjust- ments in order to improve. But more importantly, the coach sees the big picture for the game currently being played as well as the one that is com- ing up. He is looking all the way through to the end of the season. Distinguishing qualities that make up a great baseball player are the same qualities that make up a great Christian! Not just an okay, or good Christian but a great one. The thing I love about God is that he wants us to be all that we can be, the best that we can be, not just aver- age. To become a great Christ- ian you need to take care of yourself. No one will do it for you; it’s your job. You need to eat right – feed on the word of God, read it, listen to it, talk about it. You also need to exercise - a great Christian is one who not only hears the word of God but does the word. As you become a doer of the word and mix your faith with it then rest for your spirit, soul and body will be there during the most troubling times of life. You need to practice and have dis- cipline and stick to the basics of Chris- tianity. We were given two command- ments in the New Testament – Love God and love your neighbor. Loving God should come naturally to a Chris- tian and in this life you will have plen- ty of opportunities to practice loving your neighbor. Staying positive is also a must to be a great Christian. No mat- ter what is going on in your life you are still the one that needs to reflect Jesus and how great He is. The most important quality of a great Christian is one who listens to God. Just like a coach, God knows where we need to make adjustments in our lives. He also sees the big pic- ture of our lives. The part we are in the world’s five great religions and one of reli- gion’s great success sto- ries. Beginning as a sect of Judaism in an obscure province in the Roman Empire in the 1st century C.E., it became the offi- cial religion of the Roman Empire by the 4th century, dominated the cultural life of Europe for much of its history, and now counts more than two billion adherents throughout the world. In an effort to better understand Christianity as a religion and cultural and social phenomenon, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will be present- ing a six-part program, open to the community, commencing Thursday, June 3, and running every Thursday evening thereafter through July 15th. Due to the 4th of July holiday weekend there will be no session on July 1st. The meet- ings are from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Parish Hall located at 510 Jef- ferson St., Red Bluff. Refreshments will be provided. Each session includes an hour DVD narrated by Emory University Pro- Larry Jensen GodTalk now, the future and the most important – the part for the end of the season. I was recently at one of my son’s Varsity High School baseball games and our team was behind in the game. One of the other dads and I were talking and he made this state- ment, "This is where the boys need to bare down and show what they are made of." As I reflected back on that statement I can say it also rings true for Christians and the church. It’s time for us to bare down and show the world what we are made of. This sea- son is coming to an end. Jesus will be coming back soon and we are defi- nitely behind in the numbers of souls. There are so many people who still need to be saved, healed and delivered by Jesus. So let’s be great players and play ball. If you have never asked Jesus into your life to be your savior then today is a great day to make that deci- sion. Get plugged into a bible believ- ing church and watch what God will do in your life. Larry Jensen and his wife, Chaunda, have lived in Red Bluff for 17 years and are founders of Jensen Ministries. They are Domestic Evangelists, traveling to churches all over Northern California and Nevada. E-mail Larry at lrjensen@sbcglobal.net.
