A s Indiana Sigma approaches its 50th Anniversary celebration, it is important to reflect on those who made this previous half- century a great one. One of those alumni is Dick Schelsky, Indiana Beta '60. As province archon in the late '60s, Dick was integral in getting the Chapter off the ground. Because of his work, once the Chapter was chartered, the members requested it be called "Indiana Sigma" in his honor. What made you want to join ΣΑΕ when you were an undergraduate? I joined ΣAE as a new member in the fall of 1956 right before classes started. I lived in the house all four years. The active members and pledge brothers with whom I would be with were the main reason for joining ΣAE. What brought you to help get Indiana Sigma established? I was the province archon for several years, and during this time we established a chapter at Ball State. I returned to ISU in 1966 as a graduate student and later as the administrative support staff in the school of education. I decided I wanted to see a chapter of ΣAE on campus. I found that an ΣAE transfer from Evansville was a student at ISU. I contacted local ΣAE alumni and got their support in beginning the process. We started a local fraternity (Phi Alpha), and from this, we moved forward in getting an ΣAE charter for ISU. How does it feel to have the Chapter named after you? The delegation of Phi Alpha members who attended the national convention, where the Chapter was granted, met with the Supreme Council after the convention. I had no idea that they would ask the Supreme Council to name the Chapter Indiana Sigma. I feel very honored that this occurred. What was the Chapter like as they were getting established? We were fortunate the first members of Phi Alpha were outstanding and were able to secure a large and outstanding pledge class. Many of these young men were leaders. Any fond memories or stories that you would like to share of that time? During the summer, a small group of Phi Alpha members located to a house on south 6th Street that would make a good fraternity house. Our Terre Haute ΣAE alumni helped me get a loan to purchase the house. In the fall of 1969, we opened the school year with a fraternity house. How does it feel having the Chapter's 50th anniversary approach? I am happy to still be alive to see the 50th anniversary of Indiana Sigma. This is proof that the idea of an ΣAE chapter at ISU was good. What do you hope to see in the next 50 years for Indiana Sigma? Continued growth and active participation on campus. With the 50th approaching, what would you say to alumni who may have lost touch with Indiana Sigma over the years? Now is a good time to renew your interest in Indiana Sigma and re-establish old friendships. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? At this time in life, I enjoy my grandchildren and their activities. Is there anything else you would like to add about your time with Indiana Sigma? As an alumnus of Indiana Beta and past archon of Province Psi, I feel that Indiana Sigma is my contribution to ΣAE.
