Frank Columbo, "Columbo" (NBC, 1971-77; ABC, 1989-2003) Many a perpetrator was lulled into a false sense of security by this rumpled and apparently addled investigator played by Peter Falk, then a respected character actor in films. But behind this nonthreatening facade laid a brilliant observer of human behavior who could easily pick up on the mistakes of those he was pursuing and turn them into arrests. Over the series' run, Columbo was its only regular character – save for a basset hound named "Dog." Adrian Monk, "Monk" (USA Network, 2002-09) In terms of quirks per pound, nobody topped the list of neuroses owned by the detective played by the incomparably talented Tony Shalhoub in this cult hit that was a regular in the Emmy nominations. Adrian Monk suffered from obsessive- compulsive disorder and multiple phobias that included germs, dentists, crowds, heights, sharp or pointed objects, milk and snakes, and had fixations on symmetry and a certain brand of bottled water. But it was these traits, which would be considered disabilities by most, that actually made him brilliant in investigating crimes. Bitty Schram, Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stanford also starred. Rustin Cohle, "True Detective" (HBO, 2014) Unlike some of the others on this list, the quirks of this character weren't played for laughs. As portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, the haunted Cohle was dedicated to his work and carried an unusually large portfolio of case notes that earned him the nickname "the Tax Man." But his daughter's death sapped all the pleasure from his life and drove him to the bottle.
