W
hen Jimmy and Tiffany
Niles opened Axes &
X's in 2017, it was the
second axe-throwing
business in the state. Axes & X's operates
solely as a mobile unit, traveling to
breweries, events, festivals and private
parties throughout Fayetteville and
the Cape Fear Region. e couple of 12
years initially hoped to rent a building
to house the business but those plans fell
through. Tiffany, who le her job as a
parent facilitator at a local charter school
to pursue the business full-time, said she's
now thankful that happened.
Some clients follow Axes & X's across
the region, driving as much as 45 minutes
to an hour to throw with the Nileses.
When the business sets up at Hugger
Mugger Brewing Company in Sanford,
one regular drives there aer board
meetings. Tiffany calls them their "axe-
tended family."
At first, the couple was stunned to
see familiar faces at its regular stops,
which also include Bright Light Brewery
in downtown Fayetteville, Dirtbag Ales
Brewery in Hope Mills, Fayetteville
SwampDogs games at J.P. Riddle Stadium,
Paddy's Irish Pub on Raeford Road and
Southern Pines Brewery in Southern
Pines.
"We'd be shocked," said Jimmy Niles,
who serves in the Army.
But the changing locales have
broadened the reach of the business and
helped strengthen its connection with
fans. "e relationships we've built, the
connections we've made, any of that
wouldn't have been as great as it would
be now if we had gotten a building as fast
as we wanted," Tiffany said. "We've made
some really great friends through axe
throwing."
Axes & X's even has targets for youth
– decorated as popular emojis or even
Easter eggs – when they attend kid-
focused events.
