Unless it's wormy wood! en, the wonderful striations are made by the internal bleeding caused by the worm gouging holes in the trunk "See?" he says. "Wood is a beautiful thing. It's so rewarding." Ray turns back to two finished boards on his workbench. eir colors and artistry are striking, the checkerboard one (end grain) is made from five different types of wood, including Yellow Heart, Bloodwood, and Zebra. While he talks, he pulls out a cloth, pours some oil on it, and explains that oiling these boards is an integral part of their maintenance… and POP! e colors that were already magnificent are suddenly spectacular. So much so that many of his customers don't want to cut anything on their beautiful boards. But that's what they're made for. Everything he uses is natural and water based, so there are no toxins or any harmful chemicals involved. Ray likes making people happy and will sit with prospective clients and work with them until they've designed the exact board they want. His unique boards are available at e Mill End Store in Eutaw Village Shopping Center. He also works with clients individually. Ray also is volunteering with a new program helping veterans. Started by his friend Kurt Ballash at his own larger shop, Ballash Woodworks in Fayetteville, Open Shop for Vets will operate one day a week and aims to help veterans learn a new trade. "What Kurt is offering is so valuable," Ray says. rough the program, Ray can tell veterans how he transitioned from one career to another – and he can be among the woodworkers showing them how they may do that, too.
