Because the unit was in the final stages of construction when he bought it, he got to make a number of design choices about finishes, fittings and fixtures. e result is a comfortable and beautiful home. Filled with paintings, art pieces and a mix of antiques and modern furniture, its style is eclectic, harmonious and fun. It's also very personal. While McInnis has gotten advice on some acquisitions over the years, he trusts his judgement and has tended to buy art pieces that he liked right when he saw them. He has an affinity for large paintings that have something to do with water or the sky. ey are visual treats with bold colors and strong lines and were acquired in various ways. He got the huge painting of a koi pond that overlooks his dining table from an artist in Chapel Hill. e painting of a man fishing under an umbrella, hanging over his fireplace, was purchased off the wall of a Raleigh restaurant, which was exhibiting pieces for sale. His painting of an oyster gatherer in Charleston was purchased directly the artist in South Carolina. And a big painting of a boy who's fishing, hanging on a wall in the half-bathroom, was purchased in downtown Fayetteville. McInnis's style and stories fill the home. at's apparent the moment you enter – if you happen to enter during a time of the year when he has custody of a sculpture of half of a horse that was carved out of a solid block of wood. e sculpture has a slightly naughty name that McInnis is delighted to detail – it's based the horse's lack of a rear end. He and his friend Ann Highsmith went in together on the purchase and they trade possession of the horse every four months.
