Buy Original, Buy Local Theme of VAA Sale by SONI MARTIN “Test the waters, hold your breath, see what the day brings” all apply to the fi rst One Day Art Market on Saturday June 5 in downtown historic Fayetteville. Presented by the Visual Art Alliance, the VAA is rolling out, what they hope will become an annual event for “buy original, buy local.” Under the VAA tents on Maxwell Street, in the parking lot of the Transportation Museum and next to Cape Fear Studios, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., artists from the member organizations in the VAA have donated works of art for the sale. Nothing costs more than $155 and work is even priced as low as $5 so everyone can go home with something functional, like a ceramic mug, a print, a mixed-media image or a painting. I would arrive early if you are looking for a work by some of your favorite local artists, you will also need to get their early to fi nd the best deals! From the shrink wrapped affordable original student work to paintings and prints by professional local artists, visitors to the art market will enjoy a fun time of looking for reasonably works of art hidden among the very, very affordable. The VAA has even planted surprise fi nds for those who get there early — several professional artists have agreed to plant their art work as an exclusive discovery for a ridiculously low price. The VAA will collect work from artists right up until the evening before Artowrk by Jasmine Bloom the event. By the time I wrote this article, VAA coordinators had already collected original silk-screens, large format photographs, mixed media images, prints, paintings and textiles. Many artists, whose work regularly sells between the amounts of $400 to $1,200, are marked low for the occasion — all to promote the arts in Fayetteville and to help theVAA support the arts. The sole purpose of VAA is to promote the arts in Fayetteville by advertising events for its member agencies. Those agencies include the Rosenthal Gallery at Fayetteville State University, Cape Fear Studios, the Fayetteville Art Guild, Old Towne Gallery, the art gallery at Fayetteville Technical Community College, Gallery 208 and the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. People can expect to fi nd original, colorful prints, traditional paintings, contemporary mixed media, and even a textile wall hanging by Martha Sisk. Just to name a few of the artists participating, Jasmine Bloom donated a colorful mixed media; Dwight Smith, Sean McDaniel and Merle Prewitt have all donated paintings. Jonathan Chestnut and Kim Anderson have donated computer graphic images; Shane Booth has donated a photograph of his last visit home to Nebraska. If you are coming to the event, there is plenty to see while you are in the historic downtown area. The Arts Council opened a new exhibited called Visual Pleasures; a competition hosted by the Fayetteville Art Guild. The Fayetteville Art Guild’s gallery at 113 Gillespie Street will be open with a member’s exhibit. The Cape Fear Studios and Old Towne Gallery on Maxwell Street will be open for business as well.
