Dinner comedy to open March 15 Whether you have a significant other, or are currently looking for one, the ACME Theater's production of "The Love List" — a dinner comedy, opening March 15 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 520 Adobe Road — is the perfect night out, according to event organizers. The play will be presented, Fridays and Saturdays only, on March 15, 16, 22 and 23. Dinner, served by the Tremont Cafe & Creamery, starts at 7 p.m. and the performance begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at Wild Oak in Red Bluff, 328 Oak St., Red Bluff, online at www.acmeproductions.info, or by phone at (530) 727-8080. The author of the play, Norm Foster has been called "Canada's preeminent comic playwright," and is also that country's most prolific and most produced. Among his bestknown works are the classic "The Melville Boys" (winner of the Los Angeles Critics Drama-Logue Award), "Wrong for Each Other," "Maggie's Getting Married", and " Office Hours". This hilarious and thought-provoking play examines the quest for perfection, in its long-awaited Northern California premiere. The story revolves around Bill (played by J.D. Ligier), a divorced statistician, who has just turned 40. For his birthday, his best friend Leon (Lance Fox) has bought him membership in a new dating service, called "Got A Match". After completing the service's application -- a simple list of the top 10 qualities Bill would like in a mate -- the two men are shocked when Justine (Nichole Hermance) appears, personifying every quality on the list to perfection. Combining plot elements of "The Odd Couple" and "The Bride of Frankenstein," the scheme starts to go horribly awry almost immediately, when Bill's new romance begins to seriously threaten his friendship with Leon. Worse, Justine starts to exhibit tiny imperfections, which Bill tries to fix by fine-tuning the list, but ends up creating a modern-day monster. Expect lots of laughs and punchy banter, as Foster wastes no time drawing the audience into the cleverly constructed story, taking aim at aging singles and contemporary dating services by imagining what might happen when one man gets the chance to order his dream date and actually have the order filled. Seats are $36 each — which includes a full dinner (provided by The Tremont Cafe and Creamery — under new management since January), and a two-hour comedy performance. Dinner will include your choice of Seasoned Grilled Chicken Breasts or Choice Angus Rib Eye, along with steamed vegetables, dinner rolls, large baked potato, coffee, tea and dessert. Beer and wine will also be available. Tickets are now on sale at Wild Oak, 328 Oak St, Red Bluff, online at www.acmeproductions.info, or by phone at (530) 727-8080. Symphony musicians to perform chamber music A group of the top musicians in the North State Symphony (NSS) will present a varied program of music for seven to fifteen musicians this weekend in Redding and Chico. The concerts, called Experience the Lyrical, will be conducted by Kyle Wiley Pickett, Music Director of the NSS. Selections to be performed include a classical piece by Beethoven, his "Septet," which he composed as a young man in a lighter mood. According to Pickett, "this is a really charming work, a serenade really. It's a very different side of Beethoven from what we expect, and from what we'll hear when the Symphony does his Ninth Symphony in May." The concert will open with a jazz-inspired work by European composer BohuslavMartinu. Originally music for a ballet, the Revue de Cuisine has music instruments enacting a humorous love story between the inanimate objects in a kitchen. Performances of Experience the Lyrical take place Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall, on the CSU Chico campus, and Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in Old City Hall, Redding. Tickets for the Chico concert are available at the University Box Office (898-6333) and online at chicostatetickets.com. For the Redding concert tickets are available at the Cascade Theatre Box Office (2438877) and online at cascadetheatre.org.
