4A – Daily News – Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Emblem Club officers Bonnie Lewis completed her term as president of the California-Nevada-Hawaii Association of Emblem Clubs at a recent convention. Other members of Red Bluff Emblem Club who served in state office with her this past year were Karen Magnusson-Moore, state marshal; Carry Padilla, state corresponding secretary; and Jeannie Garton, state assistant organist. Cheri Fereira was convention financial secretary, and Terry Kincaid, convention treasurer. Helen Robson was meal ticket chairwoman with Carol Brearcliffe as co-chairwoman. Robson and Gar- ton headed the special gifts committee. Magnusson- Moore was in charge of convention hall setup, and Connie Ross participated in posting the colors. Other Red Bluff delegates were Ginger Mohler and Carolyn Swinhart. The club made memorial donations for its deceased members and families. For the 15th year, the club donated $2,000 for a full scholarship to the foundation funding teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. It was commended for its contribution to the Hearing Dog fund, training to aid those with hearing impairment. The club placed fifth in the outstanding club contest for the three states. FFAproject competition Young Marines report to local league The Tehama County Young Marines recently visited a meeting of the Marine Corps League detachment 1140 in Red Bluff to report on their recent honor of being named the Unit of the Year for the Nation. Their trophy was passed around for the members of the Marine Corps League to see, and a DVD was shown commemorating the 50 year anniversary last year, of the Young Marines. It was empha- sized that their official name is The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League. The Young Marines was started in 1959 in Water- bury, Connecticut. In 2000 the United States Depart- ment of Defense awarded the first Fulcrum Shield Award to the Young Marines organization in recognition of their Drug Demand Reduction educa- tion and programs. Individ- ual Young Marines units have subsequently won the award three more times, including the most recent in 2009 being the Tehama County Young Marines. These include the United Nations NGO Conference on Women which invites one Youth Organization in the Nation to send 10 dele- gates. The Young Marines National Scholarship gives up to $1,000 per recipient. The Jimmy Trimble scholarship is presented in memory of a Marine who was killed in action in World War II on Iwo Jima and is awarded to an outstanding male and female Young Marine applicant. The award includes $2,000 plus a trip to Guam and Iwo Jima. Again a local Young Marine won this award this year, and Annie Ben- nett was given the oppor- tunity to travel, as the female recipient, to Iwo Jima for the annual veter- an's reunion there. The Jimmy Trimble awardees along with the 6 District Young Marines of the Year assisted the veter- ans to the top of Mt. Surib- achi where the historical photo was taken of the Marines raising the U.S. flag. They took tours and visited many historical spots. The Young Marines serve the community in various capacities and are available to perform com- munity service for your organization. Their mem- bers are trained to present the flag properly, and they recently raised the flag at the Relay For Life event in Red Bluff.
