JULY 2019 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 31 LIVING ON BALCONIES: DESIGN FOR SMALL OUTDOOR AREAS Not only is the constant increase in turnover in the green industry over the past years evidence that gardening without a garden is on-trend – compact flower beds, vertical plant walls and mini greenhouses can transform balconies into small kitchen gardens. Irrigation systems are aligned especially to meet the needs of urban gardeners. Today there are even miniature versions of compost boxes. Combinable and multi-functional furniture ensures cozy furnishing of small outdoor areas, while decorative elements such as carpets, chimneys, vases and lanterns provide a homey atmosphere. There are also clever sunshade solutions for limited outdoor spaces such as balconies and roof terraces. Side tables or plant pots with integrated LEDs enable the "City Oasis" to be illuminated per smartphone. And one doesn't have to do without a barbecue on "balconies" – in addition to compact gas grills, the market is offering small electric devices for smoky aromas without smoke. Portable models are also suitable for balconies or the city park. Furthermore, modular outdoor kitchens enable exquisite cooking in the open air, with elements that can be individually combined in limited space. SMALL ESCAPES FROM EVERYDAY LIFE: FLEXIBLE RELAXING FURNITURE Whether on a small balcony or in a big garden, telaxing still tops the scale when it comes to outdoor living. Modular lounge furniture that can be put together to suit one's individual requirements is still particularly popular for this purpose. Current models are suitable for use in small areas, as well as for creating luxurious seating ensembles, with colors that can be varied. Extremely resistant, fast-drying high-tech materials provide soft seating comfort, soft contours, and an increasingly more living room- like appearance – which corresponds well with the ongoing trend toward woven textiles as well as ropes and straps for outdoor furniture. Expansive relaxing islands with a sunroof to protect against heat and wind offer plenty of space. Built into a nest, they can invite people to chill together. Those who prefer a lighter, more mobile alternative can opt for bean bags or pouffées made of waterproof textiles for rich seating and lounging options. OPTIMIZED COMFORT: DESIGN FOR THE SILVER SOCIETY In addition to relaxing, the increased need for comfort has yet another reason: the growing target group of "best agers" demands well-being and quality in the open-air living room. Ergonomic and easy- to-operate design is gaining significance. Low, comfortable models such as the classic wing chair, rocking chairs or daybeds are experiencing a renaissance for outside. Footrests and storage space for books and drinks are also increasing fresh-air comfort. Sunshades equipped with sophisticated technologies can be moved at the gentle kick of a foot. On the gardening front, user-friendly options such as raised flower beds and planting tables at back-friendly heights ensure optimal comfort. Even the latest grills have been adapted to suit the most comfortable working heights for this target group. MINIMAL CHIC: LESS IS MORE In the Bauhaus anniversary year, "less is more" applies more and more frequently for terrace and garden. Filigree forms and reduced materials are providing a new purism in outdoor design. The reduction to essentials is here, congruent with the expression of a new lifestyle that has a penchant for simplicity. Clear contours and slim shapes characterize a new generation of discrete furniture for outdoor areas. Bright colors for seating surfaces and frames, or colorful cushions set the accent here. Cantilever chairs or seating furniture with runners are also linear and materials-saving. The latter are particularly appearing currently in leaner models. New collections, lent rugged charm by their natural wood frames, are also in line with the minimalist trend. A MIXTURE OF PATTERNS AND COLORS: ACCESSORIES SET ACCENTS In times characterized by so much variety, our own garden is becoming a diversified world of experience. Round organic shapes and flowing structures for plant tops lend the outdoor area a completely individual atmosphere. In contrast to the still-prevailing grey shades, the "living coral" trend color of the year as well as bright shades are setting summer accents on the terrace. The design of current outdoor accessories is dominated by a decorative mix of patterns and ornaments and is lending an exotic touch to plant pots or carpets and cushions. Diverse decors and styles are being combined to provide a cheerful overall look. The complete spectrum of new products for the garden will be presented at the coming spoga+gafa in a multivariousness that is unique in the world today. Whether new furniture or plant trends, the latest technology for the garden, or up-to-date barbecue equipment, the trade fair covers the entire industry offering at a glance, with clearly structured sections for garden living, garden creation and care, garden BBQ and garden unique, to ensure a comprehensive overview. spoga+gafa 2019 is open to trade visitors on September 1-2 from 9:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m., and on September 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visit www.spogagafa.com for further information.
