We found an out-of-this-world vegetable for this issue of Official
Kids Mag. Patty Pan squash is not like the regular old yellow squash
you see in a garden, but it's just as easy to grow.
Patty Pans (We just like saying the name.) should be called flying
saucers! This little round, flat vegetable comes in different colors
from white to green and some have stripes. What makes Patty Pan
squash look like miniature alien spacecraft are the scalloped edges!
All you need is four things to get your spaceships growing:
■ Well-draining soil
■ Sunny square area about four feet by four feet.
■ Patty Pan seeds
■ Shovel
Dig up a circle about two feet across. Break up the soil but keep
the dirt in the hole.
With the loose dirt, make a mound in the middle of the circle.
Use your finger to poke four or five holes in the mound all over
and plant a seed in each hole about one inch deep.
Cover the holes with dirt, and give them a pat!
Water your mound with a sprinkler right after
you plant and every day.
Your Flying Saucer squash will start to grow, and
you will have flying saucers in 45 to 70 days. Pick it
before it gets six inches across.
What can you do with Flying Saucer squash?
Pick it and have your adult help you cook it. Some
people even scoop them out and use them for
soup bowls. An easy recipe is to have your adult
slice them in half so you can make a pizza using the
squash for a crust.
