Between now and December 31, a group of brothers has generously of- fered to match every new donation dollar for dollar up to $50,000! is means a $2,500 gi from you turns into a $5,000 gi for Alpha. Only new cash gis or new pledges count toward this challenge and all money will go toward our goal to raise $150,000 for the kitchen by February 2020. If you are already among our list of donors we thank you. In consid- eration of this challenge we hope you will match your original gi through an additional contribution, or extend your pledge another year or two. To those who have yet to give, now is the time to add your name to our donor list! One-time cash gis are needed most at this juncture, and a gi of $2,500 will secure your name on our donor plaque at the campaign's completion, though five-year pledges are still graciously accepted and will count toward the $50,000 match. is is a truly unique opportunity for us—to possibly gain $100,000 in new money over the next six months—and we hope all alumni can see the incredible potential this provides our chapter. Please consider your role in the campaign and in this challenge. Have you given? Can you give again? Or is it time for you to secure your place on our donor plaque and help us claim the full $50,000 match? Use the enclosed pledge card to have your gi count before December 31! Campaign Chairman's Dedication Leads to Building Alpha's Future Together Success Join David Fowkes '89 (A1275) in Meeting Final Challenge L ongtime volunteer and Campaign Chairman David Fowkes '89 (A1275) credits eta Xi for teaching its members to "work with all kinds of people, to build a consensus, and to motivate a group to achieve common goals." is applies to not only undergraduates but also alumni, most notably those who have spent the last few years working to- ward the success of Building Alpha's Future Together campaign. David says, "We were told we couldn't successfully raise the money needed to renovate our house because we'd lost touch with our alumni. We took that as a challenge…and exceeded even our own expectations." However, this isn't surprising with David at the helm of the campaign. Joining Alpha Chapter in the spring of 1986, David was part of the 20-member pledge class initiated right aer Alpha reorganized down to just eight brothers fol- lowing some rough times. Alpha's alumni answered the call and raised and spent over $125,000 to make the house safe and habitable before the broth- ers moved in the next fall. e remaining eight and new brothers did not take that support for granted, doing their part to return the chapter to its respected place on campus and ushering in the beginning of the current resurgence of eta Xi at RPI. While David says it was an exciting time, he was also navigating the de- mands of RPI academics. "RPI was a tremendous grind, and living in the house made it tolerable." Like all Alpha brothers since 1931, the chapter house became their home in Troy. "It was an escape from school. We did everything together." And that included studying. e friendly competitive nature of RPI had first attracted David when looking at schools—especially compared to other top-rated engineering programs. Aer graduating with a chemical engineering degree, David began working as an engineer but was soon told he was too young to be promoted any fast- David Fowkes '89 (A1275) (middle le) gathered with his alumni brothers for a reunion at the chapter house.
