10 www.DesertMessenger.com June 12, 2019 Salvation Army plans vacation DUMP THE DRUGS IN QUARTZSITE! Do you have expired or unused medications? DISPOSE SAFELY AT Quartzsite Police Dept. Mon - Fri. 8 am-5 pm Sponsored by QPD Town of Quartzsite, AZ ONCE AN RVer By Jackie Deal So did you discover Quartzsite in your RV? Did you drive through on your way to who-knows-where? But you came back, right? So do many of us. I was a full-time RVer for 15 years; that means no "stick-built house, no cement founda- tion." I loved it. But time and circumstances changed and now I'm a "snowbird." Defi nitely misnamed. We follow the sun not the snow and six months of the year I live in and love Quartzsite. Summer months I live in Sutherlin, Oregon. Right this moment I'm perched on a lakeside RV spot with about 15 other RVs. We're enjoying a four day rally. Osprey Point RV Re- sort, Lakeside, Oregon is about 75 miles from my home spot- just a nice drive in my 19 foot van. Well, it would have been only 75 miles but I was day dreaming on automatic pilot when I got on the freeway Interstate 5, and headed south. South? After eight miles I woke up, I don't want to go south! Stop. Turn around and go back eight miles. So after sixteen un- necessary miles I was ready to go north and west to our rally. But of course, fi rst I was hungry. Drive into McDonald's. Oh, what a mess, tons of customers. Drive out, go to Subway and join a somewhat shorter line. Finally an hour later, fortifi ed with sandwich and coffee, "Sorry, no coffee;" "Okay ice tea." I'm now on my way. Only three construction stops before the coast. It seems last winter our area had the "Snowmeggeden" of all storms. Days of heavy, wet snow. No power, no propane, no nothing. And afterwards? Loads and loads of downed trees and branches. Our park was heavily hit but the highway to the coast must have been a total mess. There were huge trees that fell across the road and had been sawed through to let cars get by. And now highway crews were picking up the limbs and branches using yellow dump trucks and big blue "chewer-upper" machines. (I almost got ac- quainted with one of them.) We're parked in a lovely spot on a blue-green rippling lake. And the gods are with us; it's a beautiful sunny day; I've even taken off my sweat- shirt. It's wonderful to have some down-time. As usual, I've gotten my- self far too busy; it seems I forget there is a word "no." But, that's okay because my philosophy is "Live while you're alive."
