It's not an easy process, with but we all can participate in making a better community and world. "Bridges don't fall from the sky; they don't rise up from the ground. People build them." ~ Eboo Patel With so much discourse in our so- ciety, I agree with Bergmann when he said, "there is nothing wrong with having strong beliefs, unless our love for one thing turns into hate for an- other." Extremism, strong repulsion and hate never lead to an increase in so- cietal harmony. Recognizing that we don't know everything about any- thing can help us become more hum- ble and open to others. We can't change the world, even if we wanted to. The world is not ours to control. Bergmann said, "We can only control three things in life: Our thoughts, words, and actions. But with those three things, we can infl u- ence the world around us." We can start right here in our little commu- nity, by opening our hearts to others, helping those in need, volunteering; instead of complain, seek to fi nd a so- lution. We're all in this together! Last year, I participated in an on- line course called Working Together Towards Harmony, because I was tired of seeing people express so much hatred and anger. So much has not changed, I recently revisited the course. The instructor, Gudjon Bergmann, is an author, teacher, and interfaith minister based in Central Texas. Bergmann writes engaging fi ction about personal development and spirituality. His approach is both philosophical and emotional in na- ture. His primary goal is to facilitate an honest and open dialogue, some- thing our society seems to have been struggling with recently. The Oxford dictionary meaning of the word harmony is, "the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole." A symphony orchestra repre- sents harmony in pluralistic society. Musical instruments of all shapes and sizes come together to form a harmonious melody through persis- tent effort and continuous practice. Today, harmony can be anything from lessening hostilities to increas- ing tolerance to cooperation to fel- lowship and beyond. This class has created quite a bit of discussion between participants online. I have learned so much, and "It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business." ~ Gandhi
